Job Description

The pediatric ophthalmology division located in the Tufts Children's Hospitalis seeking an experienced full-time certified Orthoptist.The successful candidate will be working with 3 full time pediatric ophthalmologists and an orthoptist.We are an academic center with the opportunity for teaching ophthalmology residents, medical school students and most excitingly, at our newly accredited combined Boston Orthoptic Fellowship Program with Boston Children's Hospital, as well as the opportunity to participate in research.We are a very collegial pedi-oph department and encourage collaboration between our orthoptists and ophthalmologists.

Boston, MA is a highly desirable location to live in. This historical city is known for its outstanding academic institutions, excellent public and private schools, miles of coastal and island beaches, proximity to New Hampshire and Vermont mountains for skiing and outdoor activities, local arts and cultural attractions including the Boston Symphony, Museum of Fine Arts, and of course our Boston Red Sox, Celtics and Bruins. Eligible candidates must be certified.

Reports to the Service Director of Pediatric Ophthalmology and is responsible for evaluating and recommending treatment of patients with ocular motility disturbances.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists Ophthalmologist in all aspects of patient care including diagnostic testing and preliminary examination.
  • Level of knowledge of ophthalmic photography, special instruments and diagnostic techniques generally obtained through completion of a two-year orthoptic/ophthalmic medical technologist program.

Qualifications

  • Work requires certification as an orthoptist/ophthalmic medical technician with two years’ experience as an orthoptist including some teaching experience.
  • Knowledge of the use and maintenance of orthoptic instruments, visual field instruments and general ophthalmic instruments.
  • Teaching skills necessary in order to administer a two-year training program for orthoptic/ophthalmic technician students.
  • Analytical skills necessary to determine method of patient evaluation in order to recommend treatment.
  • Interpersonal skills needed to interact with pediatric and adult patients and referring ophthalmologists.
  • Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to assess the needs of adult and pediatric patient populations in order to provide care appropriately
