Job Description

Student intern will work under the supervision of a faculty member on a defined project in line with his/her educational goals. Specific tasks and learning objectives will be defined by the student and faculty member.

GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Under general supervision and following established procedures, this position is responsible for supplying the Respiratory Therapy department and certain patient care areas with disposable supply and maintains respiratory therapy equipment on a daily basis. This position prepares, delivers, and retrieves equipment from patient areas; disinfects and packages reusable patient equipment.

  • ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation)

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Disassembles, cleans, and packages equipment for patient use. Equipment includes mechanical ventilators, high flow oxygen poles, nitric oxide devices, and non-invasive equipment. Prior to patient use, the technician will check and test ventilators following departmental procedures.
  • Assess and organize disposable Respiratory Therapy equipment for patient use in the Respiratory Therapy department. Maintain an organized inventory area for the Respiratory Therapy department.
  • On a daily basis, will monitor and replenish disposable ventilator circuits and additional respiratory supply in respiratory storage areas within the Intensive Care Units and diagnostic/therapeutic centers.
  • Records levels of clean stocked respiratory equipment in the clean storage area on a daily basis and reports to the Operations Coordinator.
  • Disinfects, and packages all non-disposable equipment following departmental procedure for Infection Control.
  • Responsible for transportation and retrieval of various equipment to Central Processing Department in the Operating Room daily.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work space and clean supply areas at the end of every shift.
  • Routinely assesses (daily) the Bronchoscope carts within the Intensive Care Unit for scopes, and appropriate disposable supply needed to perform the bronchoscopy procedure.
  • Assists therapists with equipment delivery needs and removal upon request if needed.
  • Answers incoming calls as necessary; accurately relays messages to therapists and/or other personnel; completes calls when appropriate. Will be readily available via hospital communication systems, (phone or pager), to respond to equipment requests.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Work requires orientation to Hospital and Department policies and procedures.
  • Must be highly organized, dependable, and efficient.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Works primarily in equipment processing areas (65% of the time) with some exposure to patient care areas when delivery or retrieving equipment or during opportunities for observation/job shadowing.
  • May be exposed to some heat and moisture in equipment processing areas.
  • Minimal exposure to communicable diseases, dirt, secretions associated with equipment processing. May be required to don appropriate contact precaution attire if necessary.
  • Minimal exposure to minor injury associated with repair and maintenance of equipment.

Qualifications

Job Knowledge & Skills

  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel computer applications
  • Excellent and meticulous organizational and technical skills are of the utmost importance as are documentation skills, and interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, under supervision and as a part of a team is required.

Educational Requirements

  • A Minimum of a BA/BS is required.
