Job Description

Under general supervision of the Clinical Supervisor, this position assists in the process of working up patients by performing a variety of ophthalmic technical support services.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepares patient for the physician's evaluation by obtaining history, chief complaint, document medications and pertinent questions and necessary information.
  • Performs various screening tasks including visual acuity, auto lensometry, auto refraction/keratometry, Ishihara plates, Amsler grid, stereo tests, confrontation visual fields, D-15 color tests, and corneal topography.
  • Performs various diagnostic tests as determined necessary through patient assessment; pupil and anterior chamber depth evaluation, Tono pen tonometry, confrontational and Humphrey visual fields, and corneal topography.
  • Instills diagnostic eye drops as directed by the physician to evaluate level of pressure in the eye and to dilate pupils.
  • Prepares patient consent forms for in-office procedures.
  • Performs basic instrument maintenance (i.e. bulb replacement, battery changes, etc.), and ensures that all equipment and lights are working properly.

  • Set up exam rooms by ensuring that they are clean, organized, stocked with necessary medications, supplies, instruments, forms, and patient education materials.
  • Cleans and sterilizes surgical instruments and keep its logs up to date.
  • Maintains refrigerator logs up to date.
  • Complies with all local, state and federal regulations and laws governing the performance of this position within the Ophthalmology department.
  • Complies with all OSHA standards, including but not limited to handwashing.
  • Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

Qualifications

JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Some knowledge of eye terminology and anatomy and physiology of the eye preferred.
  • Knowledge of or aptitude for biological sciences preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively with patients and understand their needs, and be responsive to elderly and sensory handicapped. Also requires the ability to work closely and effectively with physicians and other clinical staff, including residents, fellows, attending physicians, and nurses.
  • Excellent communication skills required effectively explaining the exam process to patients and attempting to allay their concerns and apprehensions.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, high volume clinics.
  • FluentRussian strongly preferred.

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. PLUS experience in an ophthalmic or healthcare related setting.
  • Two years of post high school education strongly preferred.
  • Completion of JCAHPO home study course or a formal ophthalmic medical personnel training is preferred.
  • Current CPR certification.

EXPERIENCE:

  • One-year experience working in an ophthalmic practice preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Close contact with patients, with some exposure to blood and hypodermic needles.
  • Busy multi-specialty practice, and work environment involving several physicians.
  • Must provide own transportation if assigned to satellite clinic setting.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to physically assist patients from wheelchairs into exam chairs.
  • Ability to escort patient to other floors within the department as needed.
  • Ability to assist the elderly and visually impaired.
  • Requires prolonged standing, walking, bending, stooping, and stretching.
