This is for a 6-month position from July - December 2021.

This role will reside in the Medical Data Sciences & Analytics (MDSA) – Clinical Informatics & Operations team within the Personalized Health Research, Analytics & Solutions (PHRAS) organization of Biogen’s World Wide Medical (WWM). This co-op is an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in real world evidence generation using principles of clinical informatics and data stewardship.

Position Description:

This position will be part of the Clinical Informatics & Operations team within the PHRAS - MDSA group at Biogen and report into the Director, Head of Clinical Informatics & Operations. As part of the team, the co-op will work on a self-guided project to investigate the use of the National Library of Medicine’s RxNorm code set, FDA’s National Drug Code Directory (NDC), First Data Bank’s Hierarchal Ingredient Code (HIC) and First Data Bank’s Enhanced Therapeutic Classification System (ETC) terminology dictionaries and code sets to data model and map medication data into therapeutic classes. Highly curated rule sets for EMR-sourced medication data will be constructed for MS and Alzheimer’s Disease DMTs, medication therapeutic groups/classes, and for deriving co-morbidities. The curated mapping rules will be incorporated into our API service calls and rules engine used in LHS for harmonizing of medication data files.

Additional project will focus on informatics design and data mapping of clinical data coming in from Smart Forms (e.g., templated structured data) used in clinical systems to help augment EMR data normally abstracted from orderable modules.

Primary responsibilities of this position include:

  • To review current state of therapeutic class mapping in LHS and data cut files and define current gaps
  • Define rules sets and data models that use industry standards for terminology and medication mapping and medication history generation
  • Construct business rules and requirements to encode the mapping logic for LHS rules engine
  • Analyze medication mapping sets before and after - that utilizes working knowledge and experience in pharmacology and clinical data
  • Define data ingestion, data extraction, and content mapping of clinical data from Smart Forms.

Qualifications

To participate in the Biogen Intern or Co-op Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Enrollment in a full-time undergraduate or graduate program, returning to the academic program following Biogen Intern or Co-op assignment
  • Minimum grade point average of 3.2 preferred
  • At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date
  • Completed at least one year of undergraduate studies

Additional qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of work experience in healthcare using clinical data, specifically medication and laboratory results data.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of healthcare terminology and messaging standards, such as ICD-9/ICD-10, SNOMED, LOINC, RxNorm, NDC, CPT, HCPCS, HL-7, FHIR, C-CDA structure
  • Broad working knowledge of typical healthcare IT systems (EHR, PACS, RIS, LIS, billing, ordering, scheduling) and clinical data modeling
  • Proficiency with SQL and HTML, with R and Python, preferred
  • Working knowledge of and experience with data management approaches e.g. relational databases, object stores, column stores, triple stores, graph stores, document stores a plus

Education

BS in information sciences, biomedical informatics, or public health. PharmD, MPH, or MS in Informatics preferred.
