Reviews requisitions for completeness, enters data into CRT terminal, labels specimens, centrifuges and aliquots specimens. Completes reports and documents to maintain quality control and answers telephones, taking and relaying messages.Job Description Details:PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Processes laboratory requisitions by reviewing requisitions for completeness, ensuring appropriate signatures have been obtained, and entering patient data, test requested, requesting physician information, and billing information into the computer.

Proofs entered information against laboratory requisition to ensure data is accurate.

Labels specimens, centrifuges and aliquots when it is required for the specimen.

Distributes processed specimens to the testing area by placing them in the appropriate buckets or racks.

Follows up and resolved issues. Completes specimen management reports and task checklist to maintain quality control.

Calls STAT results as necessary and answers telephones and provides routine approved information to physicians, nursing personnel and other staff regarding specimen requirements, test results, and so forth, and relays other calls as necessary.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Work requires a high school diploma or equivalent; knowledge of medical terminology, medical necessity, ICD-9 coding and specimen processing preferred.

Medical or Lab Assistant certificate preferred.

Work requires the analytical ability to gather and interpret data in situations where the information or problems are not overly difficult or complex.

Work requires the ability to exchange information on factual matters and relay messages to appropriate personnel.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Some unpleasant conditions are routinely present and / or frequent exposure to occupational hazards or contagious disease, which requires a minimum of standard precautions.

Some irregularity in scheduled hours because of overtime requirements, including weekend rotation OR occasional stress due to periodic or cyclical workload pressures. Stress may be encountered on a daily basis. Scheduled hours may vary depending on needs of the Laboratory.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to the Coordinator / Manager.

Has no responsibility for the direct supervision of any employees.
