Modis has a direct hire opportunity for a Senior Director of Data Engineering - 100% remote. As the Senior Director of Data Operations, you will lead the team of Data Engineers in processing, reporting, and managing data through its lifecycle while being a strategic partner with executive leadership. Data quality and processing capabilities are fundamental to our success. This newly defined role is to improve our data organization so that it is better equipped to produce the high-quality data we need to provide differentiated, compelling services/products for our customers and users (internal and external). You will play a key role that will transform how we manage and process our data. We are looking to become more scalable, highly automated, and capable of producing higher quality data. We are also looking to improve the operational aspects of data to ensure timely delivery of key business processes. This role requires understanding of Big Data technology, cloud processing capabilities, data pipelines, ETL/ELT operations, and the ability to interface with senior leaders. This is a pivotal role to build out and transform our data operations and enhance processing capabilities.

Key Responsibilities - General
  • Own the data platform from end-to-end including the data warehouse and advanced BI platforms
  • Manage our data infrastructure that is on the cloud as well as on premise
  • Learn and understand our data pipeline and the tools used to manage data through that pipeline. Help innovate our tools and processes
  • Identify risks and issues and put in place mechanisms to address those and drive continuous improvement and operational excellence
  • Identify opportunities for new approaches and new technologies that can deliver relevant data, faster to the organization
  • Key Responsibilities - Operational Excellence and Quality
  • Work with stakeholders to ensure timely delivery on key business cycle processes
  • Emphasize automation and scalability
  • Define and monitor metrics that measure scalability of Operations
  • Track these metrics over time to improve performance
  • Define technical requirements to increase the level of automation, monitoring, alerting
  • Strong emphasis and understanding of data quality
  • Understand quality requirements and implement validation processes to enforce it
  • Ensure that the right data is available to consumers
  • Define metrics to measure data coverage, data completeness, and data accuracy
  • Produce reports and dashboards that show the status of data in our pipeline
  • Show key metrics about types of and volume of data processed
  • Show trends in our processing capability over time
  • Help in finding gaps in coverage, completeness, quality
  • Identify data strengths and weaknesses
  • Key Competencies
  • Exceptional leadership skills: ability to develop and communicate a Data Engineering vision that inspires and motivates staff
  • Ability to instill confidence in the business and demonstrate the value of Data Engineering as a strategic competitive advantage
  • Deep understanding of current and emerging cloud-based data technologies, including how other enterprises are employing them
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts and technologies to business leaders
  • Ability to foster innovation and lead change
  • Key Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent experience
  • 7+ years in a leadership/management capacity around data engineering, data warehouse, data lake, data mart and data pipelines
  • Proven track record of involvement in setting up and efficiently managing data teams
  • Strong understanding of data management fundamentals, including concepts such as data models/architecture, data validation, and reporting.
  • Experience developing large data processing pipelines
  • Extensive experience building data platforms using technologies like BigQuery/Redshift, Dataflow, etc. (Google Cloud Platform or AWS)
  • Strong knowledge of relational databases like Oracle / MySQL / Other
  • Experience building high-performance distributed systems
  • Experience with modern data pipeline/orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow)
  • Expertise with modern BI tools and data visualization (e.g., Tableau / GoodData)
  • Strong programming skills in Python, SQL and Unix/Linux shell scripting
  • Experience with ETL/ELT and data manipulation tools (e.g., Pentaho)
  • Results orientated, proactive, takes initiative and has a high sense of urgency to get things done
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Hands-on knowledge of Lean/Agile engineering practices
