Under the general supervision of the Mgr, Workplace Solutions, the Linux Desktop Engineer is responsible for the day to day development, design, implement and support for Linux client technologies. Primary Responsibilities: • Develop, design, implement and support End User Computing standards for Linux client technologies. • Responsible for the creation and ongoing development of Linux builds for client endpoints. • Operations and maintenance of a Linux desktop image and associated applications. • Develop & maintain documentation of existing & newly created environments. • Maintain knowledgebase documentation to enable effective support of Linux environment by Service Desk and Deskside Services resources. • Work directly with highly-technical Linux user base to continually improve the end-user experience. • Perform Linux systems administration tasks using approved tools and utilities. • Package, (re)package and distribute software and software updates to Linux client systems. • Automate administration routines using scripts and approved tools. • Continuously remediate security vulnerabilities and patch systems in accordance with Change Management procedures. • Work collaboratively with VMware Engineers to create, implement and maintain Linux client image Virtual Desktop infrastructure. • Test and integrate new client hardware for use with Linux image. • Responsible for 3rd level Incident Management, Request Management, Change Management and Problem Management in regards to Linux-related client issues. • Establish and maintain strong collaborative relationships with infrastructure and project management colleagues, strategic vendors and key business partners. • Participate in on-call rotation for support outside of working hours (occasional nights and weekends). Knowledge and Skill Requirements • Bachelors Degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. • Minimum 5 years Linux OS experience, preferably with Ubuntu and RedHat. • Minimum 3 years scripting and automation experience (Bash, Python, and PowerShell). • Prior experience with Active Directory, LDAP authentication and related technologies. • Prior experience with enterprise IT security concepts, endpoint encryption, system hardening, vulnerability and patch management. • Experience with Linux system management tools such as Landscape and Ansible (Landscape highly desired). • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills. • Experience presenting technical solutions to technical and non-technical audiences. • Excellent troubleshooting, problem resolution and root-cause analysis skills. • Strong attention to detail with the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines as required.
