Role Summary:
  • Serves as the Company's technical lobbyist/advocate with regards to influencing and shaping future regulations and requirements for artificial intelligence, big data, data driven development, machine learning, and cloud computing.
  • Subject matter expert and regional regulatory expert for topics listed above.
  • Advocate the VW Group's policies and technical requirements in trade associations and standards development organizations for the purpose of influencing federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Serve as a liaison for technical development of Volkswagen Group.
  • Build/improve the relationship to government agencies, standards development organizations and consumer protection organization in the US and Canada in regards to related requirements and test methods.
  • Collaborates cross-functionally with key stakeholders to form key policy positions regarding topics of expertise.
  • Represents VWGoA and its positions within various trade associations to inform and influence future requirements.
  • Leads VWGoA research activities and collaborates with outside organizations such as the DOT, universities, and research consortiums.

Role Responsibilities:

Technical Policy Development (50%)
  • Represents VW Group in meetings of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, Global Automakers Canada, SAE, and trade associations; promotes effectively VW Group interests in these meetings and forums, and reports developments to VW Group.
  • Leads policy development within VWGoA in order to influence future requirements at the state and federal level for topics including artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing, and other related topics.
  • Coordinates directly with key stakeholders to inform on current policy initiatives and, through cross functional collaboration, collects feedback from internal SMEs to inform and influence company positions.
  • Represents VWGoA to federal, state, and local government entities on matters pertaining to area of expertise in order to influence future requirements and drive strategic objectives of the company.
  • Provides expert input to Government Affairs and Office of General Council on federal and state legislation to support political lobbying.
  • Identifies threats or challenges to VW Group business plans and creates policy driven solutions to alleviate disruptions to corporate strategic objectives.
Regulatory and Legislative Subject Matter Expertise (25%)
  • Serves as the NAR region regional technical requirements expert for the VW Group technical requirements process reporting directly to the technical conformity departments.
  • Responds to requests for interpretation of regulatory and legislative requirements from within the VW Group; researches issues as needed to determine whether historical interpretations or precedents exist that impact emerging topics.
  • Provides expert advice to engineering staff responsible for developing products within the realm of AI, big data, and cloud computing.
  • Collaborates closely with counterparts in the technical conformity groups responsible for HMI, automated driving, ADAS, cybersecurity, and vehicle operating system development.
  • Prepares reports and critical updates to senior and executive management on topics pertaining to areas of responsibility.
Industry Standards Development (25%)
  • Serves as the primary North American point of contact within the Volkswagen Group for all matters related to the development of best practices, core principles, and industry standards related to AI, big data, data driven development, cloud computing, etc.
  • Collaborates with core groups of SMEs within the Volkswagen Group to promptly provide input to industry working groups and advance the Group's position on a variety of different focus areas.
  • Work closely with colleagues from other markets to ensure SDO activities are harmonized on a global scale.
  • Works with experts within the VW Group to identify opportunities for future research or standardization projects and constructs proposals for research projects to support opportunities.
  • Interfaces with federal government regulators and various state regulatory agencies to advance the awareness of new industry best practices and standards.

Qualifications:

Years of Experience: 7+ years of experience and understanding of the following:
  • Engineering/Programming
  • Full vehicle systems interrelationships
  • Big Data and data driven development
  • Machine learning and artificial intelligence
  • Vehicle cloud technology and edge computing
  • Technical lobbying within the automotive industry

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering/Programming, Computer Science, Mathematics or related field - required
  • Advanced Degree in Engineering, Business, or Law - desired

Skills:
  • Excellent verbal, written, and other interpersonal communication skills-ability to convey complex technical concepts effectively to a variety of audiences

Specialized Skills - Required:
  • Professional experience with artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, big data, and cloud computing.
  • Previous participation in automotive industry trade associations.
  • Expertise in the U.S. rulemaking and legislative processes.
  • Familiarity with the U.S. legal system.
  • Previous membership in industry standards development organizations (SDOs).
  • Experience with governmental policies and processes applicable to the automotive industry

Specialized Skills - Desired:
  • German speaking and writing skills

Work Flexibility:
  • Limited travel to Germany and other locations in the US for events and training is expected. Trip duration will be typically be 1-3 days but could be up to 2 weeks depending on need. Estimated 10-20% travel.
