Job Description

This position provides on-site support for a large food manufacturing client. The work performed by this team includes supporting food development, an on-site pilot plant, and any associated troubleshooting

Deliver expert knowledge on the functionality and characterization a wide variety of cereal grains and tubers (wheat, corn, rice, oat, potato, etc.) as they are utilized for consumer food products. Contribute to the fundamental understanding of food processing by chemical and materials characterization of raw ingredient, intermediate and final products.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates and promotes the company vision
  • Regular attendance and punctuality
  • Applies GMP/GLP in all areas of responsibility, as appropriate
  • Able to design experiments to quantify changes in food processes and interpret data as it applies to products in development and commercial production
  • Knowledge of rapid analytical techniques for quantifying moisture, carbohydrates and other ingredients
  • Skilled in the use and interpretation of infrared instruments like FTIR and NIR
  • Drives and implements process improvement initiatives
  • Documents work in clear, concise manner according to laboratory standards
  • Excellent communication skills in writing and presenting data
  • Skilled in performing presentations, leading meetings, time management, and planning
  • Experience in basic project management skills
  • Independently uses and performs troubleshooting of laboratory equipment and software
  • Effective time management skills to balance multiple projects
  • Ensure all lab safety programs are communicated and followed at all times
  • Reviews and approves work performed in the client laboratory for scientific validity and compliance with company and client SOP’s
  • Ensure laboratory standards and accreditations are maintained, as appropriate
  • Performs personnel performance evaluations, staffing decisions and other supervisory activities.
  • Prepares protocols, reports, and other documents as required by the client or company
  • Familiar with industry standards, such as AOAC, AACC, USP, ISO 17025, etc.
  • Will be exposed to food allergens (ex. Milk, tree nuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, etc.)
  • Work requires 25-50% of time in the lab
  • Conducts all activities in a safe and efficient manner
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements below are representative of the knowledge, skill or ability required.

Understanding crop quality measures and the impact of seasonal events

· Food processing techniques for crackers, snacks, cereals, bars

· Rheological/Textural characterization of complex intermediate and finished food forms

· Strong ability to use analytical tools for troubleshooting food processes and identifying unknown molecules

· Effective collaboration with scientists, engineers and business leaders

· Ability to mentor less experienced scientists in a range of laboratory instrumentation

  • Able to design experiments to quantify changes in food processes and interpret data as it applies to products in development and commercial production
  • Knowledge of rapid analytical techniques for quantifying moisture, carbohydrates and other ingredients
  • Skilled in the use and interpretation of infrared instruments like FTIR and NIR

Education/Experience

  • PhD degree in cereal, food science or relevant field with 5 or more years of experience
  • Alternatively, a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in cereal or food science with 10 or more years’ experience with the applicable skills described above
  • Experienced with computers and multiple software programs used to manage experiments, data, report design and instrumental data collection
