JOB SUMMARY: UAW Position - Under the direct supervision of the Public Services Superintendent or Public Works Superintendent, performs a variety of skilled repair and maintenance tasks on City equipment, vehicles, engines, tools, and machinery. Operates light and heavy equipment and performs a wide range of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, construction and repair tasks in support of Public Services projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Educational requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent, and a State of Michigan Motor Vehicle Mechanic Certificate. Experience requirements include five or more years of related vehicle or construction equipment repair. Must have certifications in Light and Heavy Suspension; Light and Heavy Drivability; Light and Heavy Electrical; and Light and Heavy Brakes. A valid Michigan Driver's License and the ability to earn a Michigan Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within one year of hire are required. Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods, tools and equipment used in maintaining, repairing and rebuilding complex engines, vehicles and equipment. Considerable knowledge of internal combustion engines, electrical systems, hydraulics, air brake systems, and other components of vehicles and equipment. Basic knowledge of fabrication techniques including welding and cutting. Skill in performing standard and complex maintenance and repairs on a full range of vehicles, equipment and tools. Skill in analyzing and solving complex mechanical problems. Knowledge and skill in the use of diagnostic monitors and equipment. Ability to communicate effectively and to understand and carry out written and oral instructions. Ability to prepare, organize and maintain accurate records and reports. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other departments, vendors and the public. Ability to respond to emergencies at times other than standard business hours.
