Ironworker: Performs a combination of duties to dismantle, raise, place, repair and unite

girders, columns and other structural-steel members to form completed structures or structure

frameworks. Lays out reference points and dimensions on structural shapes for fabricating,

welding, and assembling into structural metal products. Fits and assembles structural frameworks

using hand tools and welding equipment and following blueprint specifications.

Employee will be more than six feet from ground level, but will be required to use fall

protection. Will be exposed to dusty/dirty conditions, but will be required to wear safety glasses

with side-shields or mono-goggles. Will also be provided gloves and flame resistant clothing.

Sets up hoisting equipment for raising and placing structural steel members.

Shop Laborer: Fabricates and assembles metal products as specified by work orders, diagrams

and templates, using hand tools, power tools, and metalworking machinery. Lays out, positions,

aligns, and fits together fabricated parts of structural metal products in shop, according to

blueprint and layout specifications, preparatory to welding and bolting.

Employee will not be more than six feet from ground level. Employee will be provided gloves,

safety glasses with side-shields and any other personal protective equipment required.

Essential Functions of the job are as follows:

Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches, or specifications to determine sequence and

methods of fabrication and assembling structural steel members and to obtain parts

specifications. Plans and develops layout as outlined on blueprints and templates. Plans

sequence of operations. Sets up jigs and fixtures

Lays out and marks dimensions and reference lines on material, using scribes, dividers,

squares, and rulers, applying knowledge of shop mathematics and layout techniques to

develop and trace patterns of parts templates

Details location and sequence of cutting, drilling, bending, rolling, punching and welding

operations. Marks curves, lines, holes, dimensions, and welding symbols into workpiece

Rigs and moves parts into position, manually or by hoist or overhead crane. Aligns parts,

using jack, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars and hammer. Fits and aligns

fabricated parts for welding or assembly operations

Sets up and operates fabricating machines, such as shears, cutoff saws, brakes, punch

press, form roll and drill press, to cut and shape components to specified dimensions

Fits and assembles components, using fixtures, hand tools, and portable power tools, such

as grinders, drills and power wrenches

Operates machines, such as arbor presses and gas welding machines, to complete

assembly. May tack-weld components together

Removes high spots and cuts bevels, using hand files, portable grinders and cutting torch

Straightens warped or bent parts, using sledge, hand torch or straightening press

Positions or tightens braces, jacks, clamps, ropes or bolt straps, or bolt parts in positions

for welding Fastens steel members to cable of hoist, using chain, cable or rope

Signals worker operating hoisting equipment to lift and place steel member

Guides member using tag line (rope) in order to guide it into position

Pulls, pushes, or pries steel members into approximate position while member is

supported by hoisting device

Guides members into final position, using turnbuckles, crowbars, jacks and hand tools

Aligns bolt holes in member with corresponding holes in previously placed member by

driving drift pins or handle of wrench through holes

Verifies vertical and horizontal alignment of members, using plumb bob and level

Bolts aligned members to keep them in position until they can be permanently bolted or

welded in place

Uses impact wrenches to tighten structural bolts and nuts

Cuts and welds steel members to make alterations, using oxyacetylene welding

equipment

May use transit to locate reference points and erects ladders and scaffolding to fit together

large assemblies
