Summary

The Engineering Manager Directs, coordinates, and exercises functional authority for planning, integration and completion of engineering projects, product launches and/or process changes and process improvement within area of assigned responsibility. This person is responsible for managing and directing the engineering activities for a custom die cast manufacturing facility. They will also plan, organize, and control production engineering deliverables to ensure that products are approved, produced efficiently, on time, within budget and to a standard.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Develop quoting information regarding die cast, machining, and assembly rates as well as any capital expenditure required.

Plan space requirements, product flow and designs layout of equipment for maximum efficiency.

Develop PPAP submission documentation and comply with any related regulatory requirements such as Restricted and Reportable Substances and IMDS (International Material Data System).

Design custom tooling necessary to mass produce aluminum and zinc die castings per project planning from Engineer.

Produce 3D models of designs, and 2D detail drawings and Parts Lists.

Job Duties:

Sufficient knowledge to be technical authority for the company both internal and external as it relates to die cast products and associated manufacturing requirements.

Interact professionally with customer engineering and sales for purpose of facilitating new business and maintaining current products.

Author technical review information and present to customer when required for the sourcing of new business and changes to current product.

Develop and maintain products, tooling, and processes within the company’s enterprise software.

Coordinate activities dealing with technical improvements along with resolving process and/or equipment related problems.

Maintain the system of internal changes to process and products.

Support all aspects of manufacturing with input to problem solving, process control, and equipment trouble shooting, analyzing, and solving complex casting design problems.

Evaluate and revise customer CAD geometry to optimize parting line, draft, ect.

Develop casting, machining, and assembly strategies which include conceptualizing for design and build personnel.

Design, specify, and procure tooling which includes complex multi-slide die casting dies.

Use Siemens NX CAD

Requisition necessary materials

Design effective gating

Provide Support

Requires familiarity with tool components including necessary fits and clearances.

Knowledge of Strength of Materials, tool steel properties & heat treat.

Ability to visualize complex 3-dimensional geometry and motion.

Write CNC machining programming.

Utilize Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) and inspection equipment to measure/layout complex components to engineering requirements

Design layouts and fixtures for new launches

Program CMM and inspection equipment

Perform and maintain gage calibration system, including scheduling of calibration services, sending instruments to vendors for calibration, and replacement of instruments and/or purchasing new instruments

Perform first piece approval and maintain first piece/last piece storage

Develop/design packaging strategies both returnable and expendable. Submit customer approval documentation.

Sign off on any pre-acceptance capital equipment run-offs.

Implements process changes including equipment modification.

Perform system/equipment optimization.

Assist with training, especially in technical areas.

Responsible for overseeing the archiving of all engineering and technical specifications.

Responsible for managing an appropriate metrology lab suitable for the company’s needs.

A strong understanding of how systems work and interact together.

Very strong organizational and planning skills.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills and be detail oriented.

Proven ability to motivate team efforts to accomplish goals and meet deadlines.

Engineering Manager is a key member of the management team responsible for leading all engineering and program management activities.

The ideal candidate will possess a continuous improvement mindset and seek to engage at a detailed level in the day-to-day activities required to deliver product on-time and under-budget.

The individual should possess a sound technical background in the Tier 1 powertrain automotive environment of major OEMs.

Strong knowledge of UG and AutoCAD, and other design software.

Thorough knowledge of Drafting techniques and Engineering terminology.

Working knowledge of CNC programming; M and G code.

Strong knowledge of print interpretation including GD & T.

Basic knowledge of CMM usage and programming

Fluent in all Microsoft Office applications. Experience with MS Project a plus.

High pressure die casting process knowledge.

APQP and PPAP Process.

Work & Education Requirements:

Bachelor's degree (B. S.) from four-year college or university in Manufacturing, Mechanical or related technical field and three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Demands

This position requires manual dexterity to properly and safely manipulate tools and controls. This position requires frequent walking and standing; occasional sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Work in general manufacturing, warehouse & office environment
