POSITION DESCRIPTION: Provide support for the surgical operations department at Client, PRL. Possess considerable knowledge of and ability to perform a variety of surgery technician responsibilities, such as anesthesia. Demonstrate effective communication with veterinarians, study directors, study sponsors and equipment engineers. Support pre-clinical studies while using the appropriate standard operating procedures (SOPs) required in the area. This position requires judgment in determining work methods and may have responsibility for tasks that are complex in nature. This position works under direct supervision in a team environment POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: Understand and be committed to the client Mission and PRL Vision and Values Know and maintain compliance with GLP, FDA, USDA, AAALAC, IACUC and all regulations and guidelines as they apply Understand and execute on Standard Operating Procedures, work instructions, department guidelines, policies, and study protocols Perform general housekeeping duties such as cleaning, stocking and organizing which includes: o Check equipment calibration dates o Check for expired drugs o Perform Laundry duties o Pull supplies for upcoming studies Ensure surgical and procedure rooms are clean, set up for all procedures and comply with quality room checks at the end of the day Clean, package, sterilize and distribute all instruments, equipment and supplies Data entry and clerical functions Support human cadaver procedures Participate in late night and/or weekend work Perform and assess radiographs using a computed radiography system Use proper handling of controlled substance. Perform the role of OR circulator, including but not limited to: o Prepare an operating room for chronic procedures o Open sterile product o Operate a fluoroscopy machine to collect and save images o Perform contrast injections for angiography o Transfer data to a PACS system and ensure data integrity Perform the role of anesthesia technician, including, but not limited to: o Perform pre-op physical exam and ASA status evaluation o Perform drug calculations o Perform blood collections o Anesthesia induction and intubation of pigs, sheep, calves, dogs, rabbits o Operate anesthesia machine, anesthesia monitoring equipment and fluid/drug pumps for anesthesia maintenance o Perform anesthesia monitoring including EtCO2, invasive blood pressure, Capnograph and spO2. o Perform euthanasia on animals independent of a veterinarian o Place arterial and intravenous catheters o Place urinary catheters Perform other duties as requested Participate in the overall operations of the department including scheduling, training new employees, rotation through late night duties; weekend and holiday shift coverage. Attend, actively participate in, and occasionally facilitate meetings which may include any/all departments and any/all levels of employees within PRL. Act as a liaison and provide support to colleagues, RO Management, and Veterinary Staff regarding animal-related policies and procedures. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Able to read, understand and follow departmental and facility procedures and policies Demonstrate legible handwriting Experience handling multiple animal species Experience working independently and in a team environment Experience working with computer applications and web-based applications Experience performing anesthesia management and monitoring independent of a veterinarian. Self-motivated Good time management skills Ability to work in a high-paced environment Ability to work independently EDUCATION REQUIRED: Associates degree as a Veterinary Technician or Surgery Technician; or Bachelor's degree in a related field (Animal Science, Veterinary Technology, Biology, Nursing); or certification in related field (Animal Science or Veterinary Technology) with 2+ years of hands on experience; or 4+ years of hands on experience as a Veterinary Technician or Surgery Technician without a degree or certification. YEARS OF EXPERIENCE 4+ years of relevant experience or 2+ relevant years with degree/certification. SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED Knowledge of animal anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and anesthesia. Knowledge and experience in post-operative care, critical patient care, and pain management. Advanced veterinary technical skills. Knowledge and understanding of anesthesia and patient monitoring equipment. Knowledge of animal and human disease states. Knowledge of cardiovascular and neuro systems in a variety of species. Knowledge of imaging systems (X-Ray, MRI, CT, fluoroscopy, ultrasound) DESIRED/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AALAS Certification at the ALAT, LAT, or LATG level Experience working in a regulated environment Experience using imaging equipment including fluoroscopy, computed radiology, etc. Knowledge of research animal physiology, pharmacology, anesthesia, and general care Office environment technical skills such as Microsoft word, OneNote, outlook etc. PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS: The physical demands described within the Responsibilities section of this job description are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
