Our client within the consumer products industry has an immediate opening for a

PRINCIPAL DESIGN ENGINEER to be responsible for planning, controlling and coordinating engineering and design activities related to new and existing company products. This position will work with all departments within the company to ensure that product specifications, performance, durability, quality, cost and manufacturing requirements are met. Engineers who are interested in technical leadership and/or people management career paths should apply for this opening. This position is located in St Paul, MN and is a direct hire.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Creates new and innovative products, product enhancements or new technologies to meet market needs
  • Plans, designs, implements and executes R&D and custom engineering projects assuring that quality, reliability, serviceability, safety, cost/performance objectives are established and met
  • Able to manage the engineering element of new product programs including requirements delivery, budget, schedule and capacity planning
  • Work closely with customers worldwide to design new innovative products
  • Performs all necessary structural and motion calculations required
  • Ensures that designs meet the structural and ergonomic requirements as defined by the customer and any state and federal regulations
  • Conduct regular design reviews to assure that designs meet required specifications
  • Work closely with manufacturing, quality control and procurement for the implementation of new products
  • Review all documentation for design feasibility and accuracy
  • Keeps abreast of new design, manufacturing and material development practices

Position Requirements:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. Advanced engineering degree desirable.
  • 15 years' experience in engineering design environment
  • Technical leadership and/ or people management background is HIGHLY preferred
  • 2 plus years' experience in design of consumer or industrial products (electro-mechanical and mechanical) is preferred, but not required
  • 5 plus years' experience in areas of machine design, sheet metal, injection molding and aluminum alloy castings desirable
  • Clear understanding of manufacturing processes including sheet metal, welding, injection molding, extrusion and casting
  • Proficient in Excel, Word, project management software and SolidWorks (or other 3D parametric modeling software)
