Immediate Supervisor:

Reports directly to the Director of Nutritional Services, and may report indirectly to the Administrator of Nursing.

Statement of Purpose:

The registered Dietitian plans, directs, and provides high quality, nutritional care to the adult, geriatric inpatients, and when called upon, can provide the same high quality care to inpatients under the age of 18. Provides inpatient and outpatient nutritional education in private, group, or community settings.

Major Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities:

Provide high quality nutritional care to all inpatients, following hospital, and regulatory agency guidelines for age specific patients, on a regularly scheduled basis as determined by the Director of Nutrition Services.

Utilize computer or written charts to review, interpret, verify, and document all medical orders.

Utilize computer or written charts to appropriately document, in accordance with Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) Policy, all patient and other medical discipline contact pertaining to inpatients.

Review and interpret nutritional screening on all inpatients, determine nutritional risks, and complete a thorough nutritional assessment following MTF Policy guidelines for Nutrition Assessment and Screening.

Document and make recommendations to medical providers concerning patient's nutritional requirements. Reviews and documents follow-up on all recommendations in a timely manner.

Leads Nutritional Support Team and serves as knowledgeable resource for all nutritional care to MTF medical team.

Calculate feeding requirements as indicated for enteral, parenteral, and oral therapeutic diets, to include the major and minor nutrients required.

Provide adequate nutritional counseling to patient and family.

Conduct nutritional education for food service staff and other MTF staff as requested by Director of Nutritional Services.

Participate and assist with the monitoring, collecting, documenting, and evaluating of data to improve nutritional efficiency.

Develop indicators based on need, and in compliance with all regulatory agencies, for an effective Continuing Quality Improvement Program.

Attend department and MTF meetings as determined by Director of Nutritional Services or Administrator.

Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, conferences, and professional affiliations.

Develop and approve policies pertaining to nutritional care, and regular or therapeutic menus for inpatients.

Conduct nutritional reassessments as determined by MTF Policy.

Provides regular, documented input on the efficient operations of the Nutritional Services Department.

Assists with skills development for food service personnel.

Writes or approves Menus and Therapeutic Diets in accordance with RDA's and Nutrition Care Manual.

Qualifications:

1) Must have a Bachelor's or Advanced Degree from an accredited institution.

2) Must be R.D. eligible, or possess current registration in American Dietetic Association as a Registered Dietitian.

3) Must obtain licensure in state of practice as determined by State requirements. This may NOT apply in all states.

4) Must have a thorough knowledge of clinical dietetics, nutrition, and operation of hospital food service; must be familiar with methods of teaching, and the principles of education; must possess thorough knowledge of theory and practice of dietetics, including physiology, digestion, and age specific nutrition requirements; must keep abreast of new developments in the field of Nutrition and Dietetics.

5) Must establish and maintain good working relationships among personnel; use tact and provide cooperation involved in relationships with personnel from other departments, hospitals, physicians, and professional associations; use considerable initiative and judgment involved in planning and directing activities of the department affecting the application of approved procedures throughout the dietary process.

6) Must use considerable initiative and judgment in the scientific planning of individual enteral, parenteral, or oral therapeutic, and regular prescribed diets to provide adequate major and minor nutrients that encourages the healing process; alertness and attention to detail necessary to provide guidance necessary in food care, storage, and sanitation of the kitchen, and storage areas.

7) Must stand and walk intermittently throughout the day; use computer or other repetitive equipment for documentation; primary amount of work is sedentary; must clearly state patient requirements in documentation; must be able to clearly state to patient, and family, requirements of diet.
