What will you be doing?

The Railcar Mechanic 1 assists Railcar Mechanics in all aspects of inspection and repair of GATX owned and non-owned railcars, while helping to maintain and foster customer relationships. Accurately completes required documentation and updates GATX, AAR and external systems directly related to repairs performed. Reads and interprets blueprints, schematics, GATX policies, procedures and engineering instructions, Field Manual of the AAR Interchange Rules, applicable Manual of Standards and Recommended Practices and DOT regulations.

The Railcar Mechanic 1 must become proficient in and knowledgeable in Railcar Mechanic 2 responsibilities, further developing Inspection, Repair, Air Brake Testing and Non-Destructive Testing skills by participating in classroom training and learning from experienced Railcar Mechanics with the intended goal of progressing to Railcar Mechanic 2.

Key Activities:

- Provides assistance to Railcar Mechanics in performing all aspects of Railcar Inspection and Repair as required to meet Regulatory, Quality and Customer production needs. To include, but not limited to the following:

- Follows all company safety rules and procedures.

- Jacks car to remove/replace/disassemble/assemble trucks to repair or gain access to parts needing repair.

- Performs Railcar inbound, in-process and outbound Inspections as per QAI 404.

- Lays out, measures, cuts, bores, burns and shapes parts as required to obtain proper fit.

- Prepares equipment and surfaces, welds, burns, fits, tacks as necessary to complete repairs (splices, patches, shims cracks, etc.).

- Sets up and operates bending, threading and cutting equipment to shape and fabricate pipe for installation.

- Applies air to brake sections, valves, levers, rods and similar equipment that is installed in conjunction with car piping.

- Assists and performs NDT functions as required for inspection and repair.

- Assists with installation, testing, repairing or renewing interior or exterior coils, cradles, brackets and such tank fittings as outlet caps, safety vents, high pressure manway bonnets, safety valves, high and low pressure valves, etc.

- Assists with testing air brakes using single car tester.

- Replaces/repairs defective piping, valves, air brake piston, etc. as required.

- Performs repairs and maintenance as required by GATX Engineering and Quality instructions, Field Manual of the AAR Interchange Rules and applicable Manual of Standards and Recommended Practices as well as DOT regulations.

- Assists to finish welding operations by removing slag and grinding when necessary.

- Performs Oxy-Fuel and Plasma cutting processes.

- Removes, replaces, straightens, renews or repairs various car parts such as couplers, gears, center-sills, safety appliances, insulation, jackets, running boards, etc. as required to achieve proper repairs.

- Maintains work area in a clean and orderly manner.

- Complies with the established safety policies and awareness for safety of self and others.

- Prepares surfaces of railcars to spray and/or decal according to GATX requirements.

- Applies exterior coating to specification.

- Applies exterior decals/stencils according to specification.

- Assists in creating repair estimates for repairs; obtains appropriate approvals, secures material, ensures appropriate car file processing.

- Ensures quality of work performed meets all Regulatory, GATX and customer requirements.

- Performs minor preventative maintenance on tools and equipment used and other tasks as assigned.

- Ensures that all necessary GATX and customer forms, systems and work order information is completed in order to facilitate correct and timely reporting and billing. Monitors and audits completed repair work orders, systems and forms.

- Works toward NDT Certifications as required prior to and after repair and as needed to assist with inspection and repair activities. Works toward obtaining Air Brake and Welding Certifications.

- Performs other duties as assigned.

Scope of Work:

This position will interact with all levels and positions within Field Services, with various departments in Chicago and customers. The primary impact for this position is repairing GATX owned and non-owned railcars. This position operates under the direction of the Field Services Foreman within a predefined GATX structure.

This person must be competent around railcars and be familiar with all customer site requirements so as to fulfill the scope of this function, which is to repair railcars. Must be sensitive to customer demands and be flexible in work hours. Will schedule and manage content of work day with little to no direct supervision.

Demonstrate increasing and ongoing improvement in abilities and skills required for performing railcar inspections and repairs. Demonstrate familiarity with inventory management. Consistently demonstrate skill in customer relations, using good interpersonal skills and be able to work as part of a team.

What is required of you?

- High School Diploma or equivalent required.

- Valid drivers license required; commercial drivers license preferred.

- Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), or the ability to obtain, preferred.

- Ability to pass a DOT (or applicable Canadian province) mandated physical required.

- Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, in English required.

- Broad Mechanical aptitude, ability to problem-solve and use sound judgment required

- Ability to learn or background in railcar inspection and repair of all car types, and the ability to progress to the Railcar Mechanic 2 position required.

- Ability and willingness to work toward Class C welding certification required.

- Ability and willingness to become Qualified in Quality Training Instruction for Railcar Inspection, QAI 404 required.

- Ability and willingness to become qualified in Quality Training Instruction for Car Repair, QAI 405, Level 2 minimum, required.

- Ability and willingness to become Qualified in Quality Training Instruction for Coil & Valve, QAI 406, Level 3 required.

- Ability and willingness to become Qualified in Quality Training Instruction for Finishing, QAI 411, Level 5 required.

- Ability and willingness to work toward Air Brake certification required.

- Ability and willingness to obtain a Level II, NDT Leak Test certification, NDT-LT required.

- Ability and willingness to obtain a Level II, Magnetic Particle Testing certification “ NDT “ MT required.

- Ability and willingness to obtain Level II, NDT Liquid Penetrant Testing certification “ NDT-PT required.

- Ability and willingness to obtain Level II, NDT Ultrasonic Thickness Testing certification “ NDT-UTT required.

- Ability and willingness to successfully complete fillet weld test within first year of employment required.

- Ability and willingness to obtain a Level II, NDT Visual Testing certification - NDT-VT preferred. Ability and willingness to complete the Class B weld test preferred.

- Ability and willingness to meet all customer suitability requirements required.

- Must be available to travel as needed

- Must be able to stoop for extended periods and routinely move from kneeling to standing positions

- Must be able to perform overhead work for extended periods

- Must be able to lift (vertically) up to 50 pounds from the ground surface

- Must be able to push / pull (horizontally) up to 100 pounds

- Must be able to climb ladders and perform work at elevated heights

- Must be able to work in extreme temperature environments

- Must be able to physically enter confined space (rail car manways as small as 18 in diameter) and work in enclosed environments

- Must be able to use a variety of medium-sized hand tools

- Must be able to routinely work near moving mechanical parts and equipment
