Job Summary:

Under direction of a Chaplain Educator, the Staff Chaplain provides pastoral leadership, education, and services as assigned or delegated at agreed upon increments of time M-F with 8-hour-per-day accountability. This expands to include duties to provide administrative back-up educationally and/or pastoral/spiritual care services offered with integrity in context.

Responsibilities:

The Staff Chaplain will:

  • Serve strategically in a 24-7 rotation of Duty Chaplain, and/or, if in place, call-back call, and, when delegated, participates in rotation as support contact on administrative backup call.
  • Serve and provide pastoral education that aims to deepen another’s pastoral identity, personalize his/her ministry style, and increase competence.
  • Services rendered, modeled, or supervised will promote, facilitate, and embody those of a reflective practitioner.
  • Collaborate with the CE Director, department members, medical center physicians, nurses, and other department/staff.
  • Dedicated to support community clergy assisting them to meet the religious, sacerdotal, and spiritual needs of patients and families in their care.
  • Provides formal support in all services of ministry, including ones standardized by the departments, e.g., spirituality groups, new admit visits, Code Response, ensuring completion of Advance Medical Directives, serve as chaplain member of treatment teams, bring leadership or manage adopt-a-family, employee assistance, memorial services, weekly worship services, special occasion or seasonal worship, referrals and clergy liaison, customer recovery, etc.
  • Accomplishes all documentative requirements including written work of post-graduate quality; Supports the mission of the department, any site served, and all ACPE CPE programs of this medical center and our system.

Qualifications

What Qualifications You Will Need:

Education:

  • Graduation from an accredited college and/or university and an ATS accredited Seminary, Divinity, or Rabbinic School, or, graduate and post-graduate studies as determined by APC as equivalent to, or exceeding, a Master of Divinity degree. Doctorate in Ministry is preferred.
  • Successful completion of a minimum of 5 units of ACPE CPE as L1/L2.
  • Demonstrated learning focused on outcomes that include competencies to design, implement, recruit, manage, mentor, and supervise students in clinical pastoral orientation (CPO). CPO is to be understood as introductory pastoral and spiritual education of qualified lay, commissioned, or ordained volunteers, religious staff, or students in on-going theological education who are not involved in, but perhaps may evolve interest in CPE.
  • Educational understanding of organizational leadership, systems, collaboration with a Certified Educator, facilitation of clinical placements in effective support of a spiritual care delivery system is essential. This includes learning to qualify as a CPE Student Mentor to help guide, support, and provide a Certified Educator feedback to benefit the on-going education of Residents and Interns.
  • Training resulting in verified competency in spiritual assessment, documentation and reporting of services delivered, quality improvement and root cause analysis, collaboration in team approaches, understanding organizational operation and complex medical and corporate health care culture, and grasp of key variables that relate to being inclusive and empathic in meeting others at the point of their perceived need.
  • Understanding and ability to accomplish delegated pastoral administrative projects. Understanding and use of the MBTI and KLSI is preferred.

Licensure / Certifications:

  • Pastoral License, ordination, and/or orders completed or in process or progress with promise to complete faith group qualification.
  • Association of Professional Chaplains and Current faith group, ecclesiastical, and religious endorsement, authorization, and support to serve in the role of chaplain in a hospital context.

Experience:

  • A minimum of three (3) years, post-seminary pastoral experience or significant, commendable practice in a process
  • Authorized ecclesiastically that required sustained, pastoral activity, institutional and congregational, are preferable. Documented effectiveness as a pastoral/spiritual care practitioner in a major medical center context. Successful management of administratively delegated projects in a lead role. Success mentoring ministry students in organized educational programs. Proficiency in experiential
  • Teaching and learning, individual and group.
  • Participation as a contributing treatment team member.
  • Serving successfully in a position of pastoral authority on a team and managing inherent dynamics of being dependent, interdependent, and independent respectfully.

Knowledge / Skills:

  • Good oral/written communication and interpersonal, organizational and leadership skills. Intra-personal awareness sufficient to use of self in ministry.
  • Empathetic, objective listening; ability to relate ecumenically and be inclusive; religious and spiritual understanding of diverse approaches to meaning making and values formation knowledge;
  • Ability to be prophetic and pastoral as circumstances require;
  • Collegial in approach;
  • Ability to meet diverse pastoral/spiritual needs sacramental/sacerdotal/ritual); conduct religious worship, use administrative supervision/consultation effectively, organize and conduct formal services and accomplish duties and responsibilities with timeliness;
  • Ability to hear, receive, and learn from feedback inherent in mastery of an action-reflection, experiential, teaching and learning model.
  • Skill with communication technology, cyber-platforms related to accountability, word processing, information systems, inter/intranet navigation, telephones, fax, copying, computation, and broadcast systems, basic office equipment, audio-visual, assessment tools specific to the department and basic use of information technology.
  • Administrative competency to include reporting up and conducting assigned or delegated department projects such as ECHO, Adopt-A-Family, Post-Traumatic Debriefing, Provision of information regarding Advanced Care Medical Directives/Durable Power of Attorney, Medical Ethics Consultation, Spiritual Assessment and Taking Religious History, Formation of treatment plans, Designing and Implementing Quality Assurance Plans, Preparation for and Cooperation in accomplishing Regulatory and ACPE Accreditation Compliance with Current Standards.
  • Supervision of Volunteer Chaplains and CPO students, managing CPO Programs, and Facilitating Community and Clergy Liaison in care of patients, Staff Care.
