We are looking for a Unix/Linux Operations Engineer to provide engineering and design services for the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) IT infrastructure under the Revolutionary Information Technology Services (RITS) contract. USACE is mostly known for their support of water ways (locks, levees, dams, canals) but they are also involved in a wide variety of support for the DoD and other civil engineering projects. USACE offers a large network connecting over 1,500 locations and operates two data centers. The RITS opportunity will provide a revolutionary approach for IT services within USACE. Working and building infrastructure throughout the world in support of the USACE mission. RITS will include the opportunity to move additional IT services to the cloud, and streamline end user support and services, while building and maintaining state of the art solutions.

What will you be doing? The selected candidate will support the production UNIX and Linux environment withing the USACE infrastructure. This position will develop system standards, develop detailed work plans, schedules, project estimates, status reports and project deliverables for Unix and Linux related project and support requests. Provides technical and analytical guidance to enterprise operations. Collaborates with and assists team members on other operations projects and tasks. Participates in enterprise system analysis, patching, automation, evaluation, design, integration, documentation, support and development. Recommends and takes action to direct the analysis and solutions of problems.

Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate openly and frankly with all internal and external partners, such as Government Engineers, Contractor Engineers, Contractor Operations staff, Management, and 3rd party vendors
  • Work independently, including the self-management of projects and support issues. Help others and ask for help without hesitation.
  • Ensure timely delivery of all Operations support requests, removing any obstacles to completing work as scheduled
  • Perform risk analysis of each Operations support request, and inform all stakeholders of the applicable risks
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership on the Linux/UNIX needs of all software and hardware used in the Corps of Engineers' environment, which includes, in part, products by Oracle, HP, Dell, Cisco, VMware, Microsoft, Citrix, NetApp, HItachi, etc., and the integration of new Linux/UNIX products within the Corps of Engineers' environment
  • Participate in developing the target Linux/UNIX architecture
  • Design new implementations of the Linux/UNIX environment stack, and after Information Assurance review, coordinate the installation of the solution
  • Document Linux/UNIX architecture, including network port connectivity, and design choices of the associated applications (Low Level Design, High Level Design)
  • Integrate Linux/UNIX systems into the enterprise Configuration Management Database
  • Automate facets of the Linux/UNIX environment, including OS deployment, SSL certificate monitoring/requests, patching and upgrades in coordination with DevOps Engineers
  • Provide secure, reliable, and high performing configurations of the Linux/UNIX environment environments
  • Support in system modernization and security compliance through software and firmware patching, development of new core images, and support new STIG compliant features
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
  • Interim Secret Clearance required prior to start
  • Engineer will possess a Security+ CE, CASP, or CISSP certification or obtain one within 6 months of hire
  • At least 5 years job experience in a related field
  • BA/BS degree or equivalent proven experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to present ideas in a business-friendly and user-friendly language.
  • Expert level knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5-7, Solaris 10-11, SPARC T and M-Series hardware, VMware, Puppet, Satellite, bourne shell scripting
