Market Assistant:
Chance Farm is a one-acre market garden that uses mostly hand tools and intensive planting to grow high quality produce, herbs, and flowers.
Duties and Responsibilities - Job Description
The Market Assistant’s time will be split between farm work, farmers’ markets, and deliveries.
A main focus for the Market Assistant is to share duties with the Farm Manager for farmers’ markets and deliveries. Chance Farm attends 2 major farmers’ markets (late June - September) and 1 - 2 smaller markets (early May-TBD), and a winter market (September - October).
Market duties will include loading the delivery van, farm display set up and breakdown, directing farmers’ market help, tracking quantities brought and sold, and most importantly, customer service.
It is vital to Chance Farm that the crew present itself well to its customers. We grow for our community, and we want our customers to be excited about their experience with Chance Farm.
The MA is responsible for overseeing deliveries. This includes the loading of the delivery van, and making the delivery in a friendly and timely manner.
While the MA’s main focus will be splitting hours with the Farm Manager for leading farmers’ markets and deliveries, the MA will spend the other half of their time participating in many aspects of the farm including seeding, field planting, cultivation, washing and packing, and other tasks as needed.
This is a full-time seasonal position, mid-May through October. Chance Farm employs approximately 4 people full-time: the owner/General Manager Josh, 1 Assistant Farm Manager, 1 Market Assistant, 1 full-time Crew Member, and part time Harvest help as needed. Crew Members are directed by, and work alongside, the General Manager & Assistant Farm Manager, and participate in nearly all of the day-to-day operations.
General duties include:
Leading farmers’ markets
Overseeing deliveries
Washing and packing produce
Transplanting
Greenhouse seeding & propagation
Trellising & pruning tomatoes
Cultivation and hand weeding
Record-keeping
Farm maintenance
Mowing and line trimming
Row cover management
Disease and pest scouting
Crate washing
Other duties as directed
Starts: Open until filled App Deadline: On going
Hours: 40-50 hours/week Mid April-October
Work days will start out Monday - Friday. The Market Assistant’s schedule will change to reflect the farmers’ market(s) being covered. The applicant must be flexible with their schedule and be available weekends. Every effort will be made to set the work days for each week.
Required Qualifications:
1 year of customer service
Farming experience is preferred.
One season’s work experience in an outdoor field (farming, landscaping, trail work, outdoor contracting, outdoor education, etc.)
A commitment to working the full season
Excellent references
Proactive communication style
Attention to detail
Physical stamina in a physically demanding and fast-paced work environment
Positive attitude, agreeable disposition
Eagerness to learn and willingness to receive corrections constructively
Valid US driver’s license, clean driving record
Willingness to follow Chance Farm’s standard operating procedures
Ability to do the following:
Flexible to changes in work from day to day
Accommodate the seasonal schedule
Work well in groups and independently
Think ahead
Lift, and walk a short distance with 50lbs
Work outdoors all day in all weather conditions
Preferred Qualifications:
Farming experience on a similar operation
Compensation:
Starting @ $13/hr.

Chance Farm employs approximately 4 people full-time: the owner/General Manager Josh, 1 Assistant Farm Manager, 1 Market Assistant, 1 full-time Crew Member, and part time Harvest help as needed. Crew Members are directed by, and work alongside, the General Manager & Assistant Farm Manager, and participate in nearly all of the day-to-day operations.
The full time crew member will be involved in most farm tasks and play a vital role in keeping the farm running smoothly.
General duties include:
Harvesting produce
Washing and packing produce
Transplanting
Greenhouse seeding & propagation
Trellising & pruning tomatoes
Cultivation and hand weeding
Record-keeping
Farm maintenance
Mowing and line trimming
Row cover management
Disease and pest scouting
Staffing some farmers’ markets
Delivery as needed
Crate washing
Other duties as directed
Starts: Open until filled App Deadline: On going
Hours: 40 hours/week Mid May-October, Monday-Friday plus two
weekend chore or Farmers’s market shifts/month
Required Qualifications:
Farming experience is not required.
One season’s work experience in an outdoor field (farming, landscaping, trail work, outdoor contracting, outdoor education, etc.)
A commitment to working the full season
