Job Description

Farm Hands - Nourish the Flathead is a non-profit, community organization founded by families, farmers, community leaders & food system planners from around the Flathead Valley. We believe in ecologically-sound, socially just, and economically viable ways of growing food and making it accessible to everyone.

Our mission is to support all people of our community in experiencing, local and homegrown food. We strive to connect our community to local food through Production, Education and Access.

Our work is focused on Production of farms and gardens and increased use of our local food system. We support Education for beginning farmers, supporting agricultural educational opportunities, hosting events and presentations, collaborating with other organizations and agencies, engaging volunteers, writing grants, and working with at-risk youth. We believe in just Access to our local food system through food security programs and community involvement in our food system as well as engaging youth in meaningful service.

Farm Hands has food access and information booth at the Whitefish Farmers Market, Columbia Falls Community Market and Kalispell Farmers Market. This booth is an important outreach tool and allows us to be in the center of each community each week. The Market Booth Manager is the face of Farm Hands and the steward of all of the Farm Hands programs.

Position Term:

Salary: $18.00/hour “ no benefits

May - October 30-35 weekly

Tuesday - Saturday

Job Requirements:

Ability to train, supervise and organize volunteers.

Understanding and knowledge of the Flathead Valley Food System.

Passion for working with farmers, youth and seniors.

Understanding of food access issues and compassion for a just food system.

Knowledge of SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program).

Strong organizational skills.

Ability to use Excel, Word and proficient in the Google Drive platform.

Some knowledge of the Adobe Creative Cloud Software and ability to create simple marketing tools.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Grant writing and fundraising knowledge.

Ability to lift 50lbs.

Ability to stand for 4-6 hours.

Ability to work outside in all weather conditions.

Duties for Farmers Market (Tuesday - Whitefish, Thursday - Columbia Falls Saturday - Kalispell)

Manager will maintain the market materials for booth including:

Signs

Marketing materials

EBT machine (charged and containing adequate paper)

Market Coins

Senior Coupons

School Coins

Petty Cash at an adequate level

Farm Hands Merchandise (t-shirts, bags, hats, stickers)

Market reconciliation sheets

Market Vendor Recording sheets

Manager will have booth set up and ready to go at least 15 minutes before opening of the market.

Manager will supervise volunteers and make sure duties are fulfilled.

Manager will ensure that all vendors know program expectation and procedure through Farm Hands literature and vendor information. New vendors can arrive each week, so maintaining this is imperative.

Manager will maintain a professional and helpful demeanor to all who come to the market booth.

Manager will be knowledgeable and maintain regulations regarding SNAP, Senior Coupons and School Coins.

Manager will administer SNAP, Double SNAP Dollar (DSD), Senior Coupons and School Coins during the market with proper documentations throughout.

Manager will report SNAP transactions, as well as DSD, senior Coupons and school coins through the vendor and market reconciliation sheets. This report is due by Monday following each week and given to the Executive Director.

Market Manager will maintain Cash Ledger for different program as well as track and refill petty cash. Request will be given timely to Executive Director.

Market manager will work on grants and fundraising alongside the Executive Director as time allows. Manager will solicit donations to our programs and the Great Fish Challenge during the summer months.

At the end of the season the Manager will create a year-end report highlighting the success of each program at the market. This report format will be guided by the Executive Director.

Duties for Columbia Falls Backpack Program

Weekly Procurement of food (vegetables from local farmers when possible) trips to Costco or ordering from Super 1

Coordination of volunteers for bagging and other duties

Communication with schools on food and numbers

Coordination of summer program including volunteers, food procurement (local veggies), and delivery to book mobile for 6 weeks.

Grant writing, donor development and corporate donor program

Help in completing a business plan and update as needed

Coordinating social media post about program and work towards press for donations

Duties for Garden Manager at North Valley Hospital

Manage 4 raised bed and native plant area

Manage weekly maintenance including weeding and water system

Recruit and manage volunteers

Communicate with Hospital and Kitchen about food harvest

Close garden at end of season
