Job Description SummaryThis position is self-directed and is responsible for project engineering leadership to the Engineering department. Supervises and directs engineering activities of the exempt engineering staff and hourly associates. Leads major engineering projects including project planning, justification, specification development and budgeting. Projects may include developing and implementing improved methods of manufacturing, procedures, and processes that result in improved efficiencies, yields, machine operations, and product quality. The position provides technical support to the development and the implementation of new products, new processes and new materials. This individual will perform both at a (multi-program) level and at the task level. This position handles multiple projects/programs while keeping to key deliverables.

Supports and leads cost reduction projects, productivity improvement projects, and equipment procurement and improvement projects. Collaborates with local BD engineers, material vendors, and outside vendors.

Ensures compliance with BD quality systems, policies, procedures, and best practices, and all local, state, federal and BD safety regulations, policies and procedures. Major responsibilities
  • Leadership– Directly responsible for the outcome of other engineering resource performance and results, provides direct supervision, decision making, guidance, and development to less senior engineers. Provides significant leadership for process and machine designs for new product/process developments.
  • Accountability– works independently with little to no input required, reports to engineering manager or unit manager. Accountable for capital budgets, design outcomes. Generates new project ideas. Engineering work is subject to the review by Engineering Manager, or Plant management. Works with all Manufacturing areas of the Columbus Plant regarding process and machine designs. Works with Plant engineers, management, vendors, consultants, and interfacing with other BD Plants and platform teams on development, design, and the fabrication of equipment or processes for new products. Provides lead in creativity around solving problems. Generally able to identify solutions to problems
  • Project Planning – Prepares and implements an improvement plan for areas of responsibility for major projects relating to: future machine and equipment needs (related to growth and replacement), preventive maintenance needs, new product support, general and manufacturing support, and general process related improvements. The plan or proposal is to include the proposed technical approach, estimated implementation costs, estimated resource needs, and a time schedule, (Pert or Gantt Chart).
  • Process & Product Data – Maintains a working knowledge of new methods, equipment, product specifications, waste, costs, through put rate, and material costs. This technical data is to be used in the justifications of new equipment and cost reduction projects.
  • Documentation – Prepares process descriptions and manufacturing specifications as required. Thoroughly documents all equipment, machines, and tooling with accurate and clear detailed prints and maintenance instructions. Prepares or directs the preparation of, or approves all engineering product and process specifications or changes to it. Is proficient in the change control process and ensures regulatory compliance.
  • Manufacturing Support– Provides technical guidance as needed to manufacturing and hourly technical personnel during the start-up of new or changed products and processes. Uses good decision making, problem solving and trouble-shooting techniques to minimize the potential or correct ongoing manufacturing issues. Identifies and implements significant continuous improvement projects.
  • Equipment – Prepares a plan for procurement of capital equipment including obtaining of quotes, vendor investigation, budgeting, and scheduling. Prepares specifications, place orders, coordinate procurement, install equipment, debug and coordinate the start-up of a new or modified equipment from outside firms or as modified internally. Redesigns or oversees the redesign of existing equipment to incorporate improvements relating to safety, machine reliability, product quality, and/or cost reduction. Oversees machine purchase and installations, as well as the building of whole machines or processes. Ensures that all equipment is safe to operate. Actively promotes and leads safety of the technical group.
  • Design – Coordinate design activity with outside vendors or internal departments as necessary. If resources are unavailable, performs own design and drafting as required to implement improvements. Capable of developing and implementing complex designs, and can approve drawings in the area of expertise.
  • Cost Reduction– Provide concepts and supporting data for cost reduction proposals to meet the plant’s productivity objectives. Initiates cost improvement projects, manages their budget and is able to write large capital requests.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Extensive experience in project management and plant process/manufacturing engineering.
  • Ability to develop machine designers, engineers and project managers.
  • Understanding of medical device manufacturing and design control requirements.
  • Experience in budget maintenance.
  • Record of accomplishment of strong people and team development.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to establish and maintain strong, effective team relationships with multiple organizational levels across manufacturing sites and business units.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, including documentation standards, adept at articulating priorities, and speak to stakeholders at all levels in the organization.
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines and see projects through completion.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% as projects require.

Supervision
  • Direct - This position will have direct supervision of project engineers and machine designers.

Accountability
  • All work is subject to review by the Plant Operations team and the Engineering Manager on a regular basis or at the conclusion of assigned projects.
  • Safety/Environment – Implemented projects and processes must adhere to OSHA safety and environmental requirements.
  • Technical Achievement – Successfully implement new and improved technology resulting in improved planned performance standards.
  • Schedule Achievement – Successfully implement planned projects to an agreed upon due date, and within acceptable resource variance levels.
  • Capital/Budget Control – Responsible for initiation of capital expenditures. Expenditures to be within the approved budget.
  • Stakeholder management – Plant leadership such as plant manager, engineering manager, operations manager, quality manager, and finance manager etc.

Education, Experience and Certifications
  • Min Education: Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent (Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline from a recognized, accredited university).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in project management in manufacturing or medical device industry and/or process/manufacturing engineering.
  • Experience working with third party vendors and system integrators, FAT, SAT, IQ, OQ, PQ, and project management.
