DescriptionThis position is required to assist with the implementation of the Noxious Weed Control Program, as determined in the Noxious Weed Control Act. Applicant must live within the assigned region (north/northeast portion of the state, i.e. Pierce, Madison, Antelope counties etc.) Responsibilities unique to the program inspectors include: Monitoring the implementation of the Noxious Weed Control Act by the county control authority, assuring the rules and regulations of the Act are being carried through by the county control authority; investigating concerns and complaints on noxious weeds; requiring information and reports from the county weed control authorities concerning the presence of noxious weeds; Cooperating with federal and state agencies in carrying out the duties of the Act; advising and conferring as to the extent of noxious weed infestations and the methods best suited for controlling these weeds; calling and attending meetings and conferences dealing with the subject of noxious weeds; disseminating information and conducting educational campaigns regarding the control of noxious weeds. In addition, this position assists with the implementation of the Nebraska Seed Act through surveillance and seed sampling and testing; and will also provide back-up assistance in other program field activities in their regions as needed. This position will be understaffed at an Agriculture Inspections Specialist I with the expectation of becoming a level II Pay for Agriculture Inspections Specialist I $15.861/hour. Pay for Agriculture Inspections Specialist II $18.330/hour.Location of position: Nebraska State Office Building, Lincoln, NEExamples of WorkConduct survey and detection activities for noxious weeds, seed sampling and industrial hemp sampling. Conduct Noxious Weed Surveys, inspections, complaints and follow up. Evaluate counties, program evaluations, review annual reports for noxious weed surveillance. Assist with other program inspections to determine compliance with state and/or federal licensing requirements. Conduct education and outreach activities with agricultural industries, the general public, and special interest groups, to inform them of noxious weed control, seed issues and other Department programs as needed.Qualifications / RequirementsREQUIRED: Post high school coursework/training in agriculture, plant/animal or natural sciences, or other program related field OR a vocation certificate in electrical, mechanical, engineering or other program related field. AND Post high school coursework/training in agriculture, plant/animal or natural sciences, or other program related field OR a vocation certificate in electrical, mechanical, engineering or other program related field. AND Two years' experience working in a relevant discipline.PREFERRED: Post high-school Agricultural education in horticulture or plant biology and experience in regulatory workKnowledge, Skills and AbilitiesMust be able to manage time effectively and create work agendas with minimal supervision; identify noxious weeds or pests; communicate with constituents and authorities such as superintendents, boards and the public; able to handle regulatory enforcement; be proficient in Microsoft products and comfortable using a computer, tablet, and scanner to complete work.
