This position is located in the Scholarly Communication Initiatives (SCI) department, which resides in the Collections, Acquisitions and Discovery Division. The Scholarly Communication Initiatives department provides expertise and high-level support in the areas of publishing, preserving, and measuring the impact of scholarship produced at UNLV. Current initiatives of this dynamic and growing department include the education and expansion of open access options to UNLV researchers, defining the role of the institutional repository Digital [email protected] in the broader UNLV research information management ecosystem, supporting and educating UNLV researchers and administrators in their use of impact metric tools, and assisting researchers in managing their online identities and reputation.
ROLE of the POSITION
UNLV and University Libraries strives to foster a climate of innovation in which faculty and students produce high-quality, widely disseminated, and influential research, scholarship, and creative activities. As a critical partner in research and scholarly communication, the Libraries has created this new position to improve access to, and increase the impact of UNLV scholarly research outputs and to develop related services in the areas of research metrics and reputation management.
This role is highly collaborative, and the successful candidate must be an active relationship builder and excellent communicator with the ability to work cross-organizationally to develop and communicate Libraries' services. Collaborations will include working with researchers from across the disciplines, research service providers within the Libraries, in particular librarians in the Research and Educational Division (RED) and key campus stakeholders such as the Office of Research and Economic Development.
Reporting to the Head of Scholarly Communication Initiatives (SCI), specific duties are as follows:
- Utilizes Digital [email protected] to manage, store and make public UNLV research outputs.
Provides expertise and guidance on fulfilling federal mandates for sharing/dissemination of research outputs such as data and articles.
Collaborates with the Data Librarian to provide holistic support for research data services with a focus on dissemination and preservation.
Utilizes appropriate research metrics, including citation analysis, bibliometrics, altmetrics, and emerging tools to assist faculty with articulating research impact and managing scholarly reputation.
Provides analyses of bibliometric data for campus stakeholders.
Supports research workflows through the identification of appropriate tools (e.g., Open Science Framework and Figshare), and provides support/expertise for those tools. Develops an understanding of existing research infrastructures, tools, and workflows used by researchers at UNLV to inform direction in this area.
Advises and guides UNLV researchers on best methods to maximize their reach and online reputation through social media platforms such as academia.edu, google scholar etc. and the use of persistent identifiers such as ORCID.
Acts as lead contact for the Libraries' subscription to ORCID, overseeing technical issues or projects such as implementing single sign-on.
Utilizes a variety of outreach and communication methods such as workshops, consultations, and library guides to engage researchers.
Contributes to overall SCI department efforts to inform and educate UNLV faculty and students on the evolving scholarly landscape. Stays current and up to date with scholarly communication and related areas to be effective in this task.
As a tenure-track library faculty member, the incumbent will also be expected to engage in scholarly activities, including publication, and to provide service to the university, the community, and the profession in accordance with Libraries and University standards for promotion and tenure.
This position requires an earned Master's Degree in library or information science from an American Library Association accredited program by the date of appointment.
- Competence and sensitivity in working at a university in which students, faculty, and staff are highly diverse with regard to many facets of identity, including but not limited to gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, income, level of education attainment, and religion.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with faculty, students, key campus stakeholders, and research service providers within the library.
Knowledge of the variety of researcher identifiers (like ORCID) and author-level metrics.
Experience and knowledge of the bibliographic and citation databases that provide bibliometric data, such as Dimensions, Plum Analytics, Scopus, and Web of Science.
Knowledge/understanding of research workflows and the research lifecycle.
Demonstrated understanding of scholarly repositories and the ability to communicate opportunities and address issues to the campus community related to their use.
- Familiarity with scholarly communication practices around such topics as open access, author rights and permissions, research information management systems, and research data management.
Demonstrated knowledge of current issues and emerging trends in scholarly publishing.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects from startup to completion, including developing workflows and documenting processes.
Ability to identify and implement methods to automate collecting publication and creative work data of UNLV researchers.
Demonstrated teaching ability.
This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position at Rank II (equivalent to Assistant Professor). Salary competitive with those at similarly situated institutions. The position is contingent upon funding with a minimum starting salary of $65,000.
