Staff Mechanical Engineer

Description

Tesla is looking for a Staff Mechanical Engineer to be part of the GF1 Infrastructure Engineering Team. This position would be responsible for designs ranging from Vehicle Production, Cell Production, Central Utility Plant, Offices, Service Centers, and HAZMAT storage. This position will mentor junior engineers/designers and may require managing outside consultants to meet project design schedules. This candidate must be able to prioritize and manage workload on multiple projects to maintain high quality and productivity and use professional concepts and company objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for developing mechanical design packages for permit and construction

  • Mentor and be a technical resource for engineers/designers

  • Supervise engineers/designers to develop equipment datasheets, construction documents and specifications

  • Review and develop designs that are cost effective, Code compliant while meeting Company’s quality and schedule requirements

  • Able to develop high level cost estimates with material take off information for all sizes of projects in short time frames

  • Must be able to prioritize and manage heavy workload to ensure high quality and productivity

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years HVAC and Plumbing/FP design experience
  • Expert knowledge in International Energy Conservation, Mechanical, Plumbing and Fire Protection Codes, NFPA standards, SMACNA duct construction standards, ACGIH Ventilation Practices, and ASHRAE 62 and 90.1

  • Demonstrated use of alternative means and methods for performance-based designs

  • Holds a PE registration and ability to be registered in any State
  • Proficient in the use of following applications Trane or Carrier HAP, Revit, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite. Experience in Caesar 2 and Pipe-flo are a plus.

  • Familiar with following types of calculations: duct static pressure drop, pump head, NPSHa, fuel gas pipe sizing, steam, and condensate pipe sizing

  • Experience in strategic project and technical program management

  • Exhibits the highest level of autonomy and attention to detail

Work Experience

  • Experience in designing Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems for industrial / pharmaceutical / manufacturing / bio-tech / semiconductor type facilities
  • Plumbing and Fire Protection design experience
  • Design experience with equipment including: open and/or closed circuit cooling towers, water and air cooled chillers, heat recovery chillers, gas fired and electric water boilers, 40,000 cfm or larger packaged rooftop heat pump units, packaged air to air heat pumps, water to water heat pumps, combustible / non-combustible dust collectors, high pressure water atomizing humidifiers, -50C dew point dehumidifiers, fans, pumps, thermal oxidizers, dry and wet scrubbers, heat exchangers (shell/tube, plate/frame, brazed fin), control valves and Instrumentation.
  • Design experience with systems including: variable exhaust and supply, combustible dust collection, air to air, air to water and water to water heat recovery, VOC abatement, smoke removal, hazardous, general and process exhaust, DOAS, ventilation and general HVAC.

  • Able to specify ductwork and pipe material and size for various systems and pressure classes
  • Knowledge and experience with writing sequences of operation for HVAC systems
  • Construction Administration experience including field reports, punch lists, answering RFIs, and reviewing shop drawings
  • Direct experience in the preparation of mechanical contract drawings and engineering specifications

  • Design piping and duct to handle thermal expansion/contraction including anchors, guides, expansion loops
  • Pipe stress analysis and duct stress analysis experience
  • Design, technical or project management experience
