Job Description

A key driver in following through on KIPP NYC’s commitment to Equity is ensuring that all of our students can read, to ensure access to choice-filled lives. Middle School Reading Interventionists will be responsible for providing small group instruction for middle school students who are reading below a third grade reading level. Prior to beginning teaching responsibilities, all Interventionists will complete a five day training in Orton Gillingham Reading Instruction. This approach is one of the longest-proven, evidence based pedagogies for phonics. Through targeted, data-driven small groups, interventionists will identify students’ gaps in phonemic awareness, and teach students using the Orton Gillingham materials and scope and sequence to advance student learning and contribute to significant gains in reading growth. Reading Interventionists will be based in one of KIPP NYC’s nine middle schools located in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Brooklyn. In addition to the Orton Gillingham training, interventionists will also receive ongoing coaching and support from regional and school-based staff.

General responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Diagnosing student reading needs using KIPP NYC’s tiered literacy assessment approach.
  • Use Orton Gillingham materials and scope and sequence to teach phonics instruction.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and 1:1 coaching.
  • Collect and track reading data including but not limited instructional and independent reading level growth.
  • Foster a sense of excitement and investment among students for reaching and surpassing their individual reading goals.
  • Effective collaboration skills with grade-level literacy teachers across multiple grades.
  • Commit to constant professional and personal growth through working closely as part of a team of teachers.
  • Constantly assess student progress, and communicate results to families and colleagues.
  • Model the school’s values in all communications with students, families, and staff.
