Job Description

The Organic Analyst performs preparation techniques and instrumental analysis of environmental samples for the determination of organic compounds (semi-volatile). The Analyst III also performs advanced instrument maintenance and instrument troubleshooting. Day to day activities include analyzing environmental samples primarily using GC and/or GC/MS systems, but also LC/MS/MS and HPLC as needed in conjunction with automated sample introduction systems. Analyst III will perform sample preparation, quality control sample preparation, data evaluation, and data reporting. Analyst III will utilize advanced scheduling and approval systems in the SGS Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). Extraction and preparation of environmental samples for analysis may be required. The Analyst III should be able to review and approve or reject analytical batch data, train lower level analysts on technical aspects of instrument maintenance or new methods, and monitor work assignments of lower level staff in the absence of a team leader or supervisor.

Analyst III personnel will train under a Team Leader or higher staff member until demonstration of capability to work without oversight has been completed.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and analyze environmental samples according to approved test methods and SGS SOPs using LC/MS/MS, HPLC, GC and/or GCMS systems
  • Utilize and understand essential MassHunter/Chemstation/Enviroquant functions for instrument tuning, sequencing and data processing
  • Perform Instrument maintenance and repair as needed
  • Utilize LIMS functions including generating work lists, obtaining updating job status and data approval
  • Perform analytical standard preparation
  • Maintain all required documentation with accuracy and clarity
  • read, understand and perform all applicable laboratory SOPs as written. perform initial and annual Demonstration of Capability
  • Maintain familiarity with quality control measures and calculations required for applicable methods
  • Ensure laboratory glasswear is properly cleaned and maintained
  • Follow all SGS Safety, Ethics and Quality practices
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area
  • Participate in staff meetings
  • Required to operate multiple instruments on a day to day basis
  • Required to be familiar with extraction and preparation techniques including SPE, Liquid-Liquid, etc.
  • Ability to train others on instrument maintenance and repair
  • Ability to train others on methods and how to perform them
  • Ability to review and approve or reject batch data

Supervision:

  • Receive close supervision related to specific work activities, assignments, methods, etc; usually receive frequent surveillance over job activities; instructions are detailed and assignments are typically short-term. Monitor work assignments of lower level personnel

Qualifications

Education / Experience

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A) in chemistry, or a related field from four-year college or university
  • Prior experience is necessary

Language / Math / Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiple, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
