We are currently looking to appoint a

Research Engineer focused in Robotics and software development for a 24-month fixed-term contract. This is a highly skilled and experienced role, supporting and coordinating robotics engineering work, focused on software development and product testing.

You will support us as we work on exciting robotics based projects predominantly within healthcare and agriculture. You will split your time between software development, product testing and provide support to the wider team as we move forward in this interesting field of study.

Software development processes

  • Ensures software quality across projects
  • Contributes guidance on software development processes and software management to Research Fellows, undergraduate and postgraduate students during project planning and delivery.
  • Creates and communicates to the team: guidelines, processes, style consistency
  • Provides regular communication with project team leaders on aspects of software development processes
  • Manages group software management tools (e.g. Github, Slack, etc)
  • Manage hardware and software test environments

Project-specific activities

  • Analyses requirements, understandproject needs based on direction from Research Fellow, then designs team software architectures
  • Works with the Research Fellow to ensures all the team’s software for the project has appropriate tests defined, test schedules planned and communicated with the team and software is tested well before being used outside the labs
  • Finds, chooses, creates, and communicates with the project team about software development and collaboration tools
  • Sets up and maintains the testing and training environment for ML models
  • Works with the lab technician to set up and maintain the physical hardware, robot platforms, equipment and tools for experiments, testing and deployment in the field.

The objective of the

Centre for Automation and Robotic Engineering Science (CARES) group is to create an internationally renowned sustainable centre that develops robotic technologies for humans to improve their quality of life.

CARES’ research activities are principally based in the area of Human-Robot Interaction, Robot Programming Systems and their multitude of applications, such as healthcare, precision farming, offices, and factories.

The research activities cover the full spectrum of pure to applied science and draws on the core expertise in Robotics and Mechatronics across multiple technological disciplines including Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science.

The interdisciplinary focus in the research and development of robotic technologies also requires core expertise from Social Sciences and Medical and Health Sciences such as gerontology, nursing, pharmacy and psychology. CARES is an interdisciplinary team that works closely to design and execute this research and helps translate it to end-users and manufacturers.

He kōrero mōu | About you

To succeed in the role you will need a Bachelors or equivalent degree in Engineering or Software. It would be beneficial to have additional academic qualifications such as a MSc, ME, BE or BSc degree in computing and software but this is not essential.

We are looking for a person with excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) and who loves to work in a team environment. It would be a big bonus for us if you have experience in large software projects.

Ideally, you will have advanced experience in

C, Ubuntu/Linux, Windows

Experience with the below would be preferred but is not essential Python, OpenGL, Qt, Git, linear algebra, MATLAB, database programming, ROS, Machine Learning, Electronics.
