As a leader and owner, you will guide the mainframe platform to deliver solutions supporting our business roadmaps through automation and operational efficiency. You will strive to ensure the mainframe platform continues to meet high availability, security, quality, and reliability goals. The Solution Engineer will transform conceptual architecture into detailed technical requirements implemented within the engineering team. You will also partner with New York Life's Technology teams to implement technology solutions supporting our Life Insurance and Investment products. Lastly, you will also lead the transformation of legacy systems and practices through optimization, automation, and modernization.

Job Function and Key Duties & Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to fulfilling engineering duties in the area of mainframe and cloud middleware services, automation, capacity and performance management, and networks.

  • Serves as a technical resource in mainframe systems engineering and provides guidance and technical coaching to less experienced staff.
  • Acts as a subject matter expert in assigned functional domain(s), mainframe and cloud serves
  • Participates in infrastructure planning, providing insight into the future of their area(s) of technology.
  • Receives performance data and analyzes the performance of installed technologies. Proposes and implements any required changes, including identifying and planning for any resulting impacts on other technologies.
  • Provides technical leadership to project teams in their area of expertise and/or leads teams to complete projects specific to their area(s) of expertise.
  • Maintains an industry awareness of new developments in their area of expertise; learns and applies new and emerging concepts very quickly.
  • Forms strong networks with internal and external customers, the vendor community and peers in the industry.
  • Ensures proper documentation of complex technical systems to facilitate effective handover to operations.
  • Leads implementation efforts - leads the analysis of vendor proposals, evaluates build versus buy, formulates the complete project plan, establishes the critical path, coordinates vendors, builds and conducts tests, and tracks project progress.

Required / Preferred Qualifications:
  • 7+ years of relevant experience
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or closely related discipline required, Masters Degree preferred.
  • Candidate should have a track record of rapidly learning and mastering new technologies with the resources at hand.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to clearly and concisely document procedures for various tasks needed to be performed by Technical Operations
  • Strong knowledge of the mainframe hardware, operating system (z/OS and z/VM), specifically core components such as CICS, MQ, Web Services and z/OS Communication Server.
  • Experience working with AWS and its services such as EC2, Lambda, ELB, ECS, IAM, S3, RDS, etc.
  • Experience developing automation and operation capabilities in one or more of the following: Cobol, Assembler, C, JAVA, Python. Good working knowledge of High-Level Assembler language to maintaining usermods and system exits is a plus.
  • Ability to navigate tech and solutions to problems and ability to explore cloud terms (AWS, AZURE, etc.).
