Tri-Axle Dump Truck Driver
POSITION SUMMARY:
A truck driver drives trucks for commercial freight and transport purposes. Truck drivers assemble, load, secure, and unload vehicles, transport goods and materials, and perform routine vehicle inspections and maintenance. They may be an owner driver or drive company-owned vehicles. Truck drivers transport and handle a wide variety of materials. There are truck drivers that use small vehicles and others that drive very large road trains. All truck drivers, regardless of truck size or load type, are responsible for the stability of their load and require one or more special licenses.
CDL Drivers are responsible for transporting different types of goods from distribution centers to customer locations using a truck. They are also required to perform inspections before and after a trip, and unload cased products from the trailer to customer facilities. These drivers also follow appropriate safety procedures to transport dangerous cargo and maintain logs of vehicle repair status and working hours.
CDL Drivers usually perform many of the following tasks:
Delivering freight
Managing proof of delivery paperwork from customers
Assisting workers in loading and unloading trucks
Checking mechanical aspects of the vehicle
Driving different types of trucks.
Complete a daily truck log and submit reports of mileage covered at EOD
Observe and report equipment or mechanical failures immediately
Manage routes and routines so they proceed in the most efficient way possible
Find ways to conserve resources, including fuel, to benefit the business
Serve as a brand advocate and ambassador in every interaction with clients and the public
Conduct daily inspections of the vehicle at the end of the shift and report any problems or damage to management
Comply with all DOT and in-house regulations and rules
Transport finished goods and raw materials over land to and from manufacturing plants or retail and distribution centers
Inspect vehicles for mechanical items and safety issues and perform preventative maintenance
Plan routes and meet delivery schedules
Document and log work/rest periods and kilometers spent driving and retain fuel/toll receipts
Input "macros" into our automated system for each stage of the loading and unloading process
Comply with truck driving rules and regulations (size, weight, route designations, parking and break periods) as well as with company policies and procedures
Maneuver trucks into loading or unloading positions
Collect and verify delivery instructions
Report defects, accidents or violations
Requirements
Proven work experience as a truck driver
Hands on experience with electronic equipment and software (GPS, AVL units, CB etc.)
Ability to drive long hours and travel regularly
Extensive knowledge of applicable truck driving rules and regulations
No recent moving or driving violations
Adaptability and foresight to handle unexpected situations (traffic, weather conditions etc.)
Willing to submit to background/drug checks and provide employment recommendations
Trucking school diploma
Valid CDL driver license
Interpersonal Relationships
Have a high level of social contact. They work with freight handlers and dispatchers, as well as customers on sales routes.
Communicate with others by telephone and in-person on a daily basis. They also write letters and memos, but much less frequently.
Are responsible for the health and safety of other people using the roads.
Often work as part of a group or team.
Are occasionally placed in conflict situations where people might be rude or angry.
Are responsible for the work done by others.
Physical Work Conditions
Drive an enclosed truck on a daily basis.
Work outdoors while loading and unloading goods. Work indoors while driving or filling out paperwork. Indoor temperatures may not be controlled.
Are often exposed to contaminants, such as diesel fuel or exhaust.
Wear protective or safety attire on a weekly basis.
Sometimes are exposed to very hot or very cold temperatures while working outside.
May have to get into cramped positions to reach work spaces, such as the back of a truck.
Are sometimes exposed to hazardous situations that might produce minor cuts or scrapes.
Are occasionally exposed to bright or dim lighting conditions.
Are occasionally exposed to whole body vibration when driving a truck.
Sometimes deal with sounds or noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable.
Work close to others, especially when unloading trucks.
