We are looking for an execution focused technologist to lead the development efforts associated with our Life Insurance Product introductions and oversee an application suite aligned to our policy administration ecosystem. The Development Lead will manage teams of Solution Developers and Solution Engineers as they enhance / introduce new products and streamline our development and deployment processes. The Development Lead is also responsible for outlining the architectural direction of their application suite, securing the longevity of the ecosystem

As a lead, you will be able to actively improve the work environment in which all knowledge workers operate and be responsible for coaching and career development of the tech resources within your team.

The individual should have technical delivery experience and be able to manage multiple priorities with involvement from matrixed and direct line teams.

Functional Responsibilities:
  • Oversee a development team aligned to an application suite leveraging both agile and waterfall methodologies
  • Ensure applications within that suite are secure, stable, available and meet all SLAs aligned to production performance
  • Provide leadership and guidance throughout the delivery lifecycle in relation to software development and testing
  • When circumstances require, take a hands-on role to ensure objectives are met
  • Mature adherence to scaled agile methodologies leveraged by the teams in order to increase velocity, quality and speed to market
  • Establish a modernization agenda focused on the evolution of the team, as well as the application suite (currently primarily mainframe), aligning to best practices, industry trends and New York Life's architectural principles
  • Works with Enterprise Architecture team to ensure standards and best practices are being adhered to
  • Ensure application suite meets security requirements and manage relationship with Security Review Board addressing issues proactively and as they arise
  • Ensure solution designs and development efforts aligned with the future direction of the ecosystem
  • Establish and cultivate a relationship of a trusted partner with the business
  • Establish high level plans and estimates of efforts required to modify the application suite based on the needs of business or technology initiatives
  • Articulate technology issues/concerns that may emerge at any level of the technical stack, and from any component to non-IT stakeholders including senior business sponsors
  • Maintain adherence to key quantitative metrics aligned to delivery, e.g. quality of code, defect density, schedule adherence, etc.
  • Establish a collaborative working relationship with internal and external teams participating in initiatives
  • Adequately assess team capacity against demand and establish velocity metrics for delivery
  • Recommends investments in new tools or the adoption of new processes/methodologies

Required Skills:
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to varying audiences, including non-technical business executives
  • Maintains up to date and thorough knowledge of modern mainframe technologies as well as complimentary /supplementary tools and techniques available in the marketplace
  • Possesses a broad understanding of current and emerging technologies, i.e., what is and what is not possible
  • Life Insurance Experience (2-5 years)
  • Technical Delivery Experience (2-5 years)
  • Congenial history of building consensus among competing interests
  • Knowledge of both modern and mainframe technologies
  • Knowledge of Agile Development practices
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field and/or equivalent work experience

Desired Qualifications:
  • MBA or Master's degree in a related field
  • High Tech, Life Insurance or Financial Services industry experience
  • Proficient in Assembler, CICS, PL1, COBOL, IDMS, DB2, VSAM, VSAM Transparency, JCL (Job Control Language)
