Breaking News Reporter

New Jersey, Northsydney 00000 Northsydney USA

Vacancy expired!

Job Description

Your new opportunity at Nine.

The Financial Review is seeking an energetic breaking news reporter based in our Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra or Brisbane bureaus.

You will have:

  • A passion for news and current affairs
  • A demonstrated ability to work independently when required
  • A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others when required
  • A willingness to take direction from homepage editors
  • Digital production skills including headline writing and image selection
  • An understanding of SEO, or a willingness to learn

The role is full-time, permanent and will require early morning starts

As a member of the national team, you will work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment to take carriage of our very popular Need to Know live blog. You’ll write quick, concise copy that conforms to house style, work angles and headlines hard, and select interesting imagery so the blog reads well and looks great too.

Subscribers have flocked to the Need to Know blog, which kicked off as a hub for coronavirus news during the early days of the pandemic and has since been broadened out to breaking national and political news. It is a sister blog to our Markets Live blog, which covers breaking business and markets stories.

In its current form Need to Know covers politics, parliamentary inquiries, policy, regulatory, economics and human interest news for a national, business-focused audience.

An interest in business and economics is crucial, and while reporting experience in these fields is desirable it is not essential. Curiosity, however, about the influence of business in politics and society is a must.

The role would suit an early-career reporter with digital reporting and production skills, as well as strong news judgement and a willingness to learn.

Day to day you will be expected to:

  • Monitor and respond to breaking news across a range of platforms
  • Source and generate your own unique content ideas
  • Prepare clear, accurate, balanced, timely posts that conform to house style
  • Be proactive about the visual presentation of the blog, including through commissioning accompanying photography and graphics
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, who also contribute to the blog
  • Ensure all copy meets legal requirements

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:

  • One to two years experience as a digital journalist or producer
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills

Applications close on 3 December 2021.
