  • Using both commercial and internally-developed tools, model key phenomena as needed for optical design work, often including a combination of rare-earth amplifier physics, light propagation in optical fibers or integrated optical circuits, and nonlinear optics
  • Work closely with electrical and mechanical engineering colleagues to derive physical and electronics requirements from optical performance requirements
  • Supervise and direct the work of both technicians and less senior optical engineers in the development, modeling, and testing of optical systems
  • Work closely with the flight hardware fabrication team to develop appropriate build and test procedures
  • Interact extensively with Government customers, during formal program reviews and throughout the program lifecycle, to negotiate requirements, present detailed technical status updates, and to identify new business opportunities
  • Develop accurate estimates of resources and task intervals for program managers, and track and meet schedule milestones and cost objectives
