Background to Sensorial & Consumer Science Excellence

Sensorial & Consumer Science Excellence is a product experience research team within RB R&D challenged with developing and delivering innovation focused on embedding consumer insight, preference and appeal into product or science visualization propositions early in the NPD process.

S&CSE are responsible for the interpretation of consumer needs and market opportunities (provided by category marketing, CI and Medical Science) into product embodiments or, with the support of category colleagues, new business opportunities outside of physical product-in-box.

SCSE are responsible for building consumer sentiment into the product innovation programs of R&D through the planning and management of innovation in-the-field, consumer observation, provocation, prototyping and other consumer-product touch point activities SCSE is multi-disciplinary and autonomous in the strategy it employs to deliver against its objectives requiring leadership and sound business understanding from all team members.

Fragrance and Flavor play a major role in the experience of RB’s products and it is critical that we have world class leadership within this.

Role Purpose :

This role will manage complex interfaces and relationships within the Category Development Organization (CDO) / local marketing teams and between the CDO / local marketing teams and the RB core fragrance suppliers to define and drive fragrance and flavour strategies and lead all new fragrance and flavour developments and bank recommendations for Health and Nutrition.

This role will also require close relationships between Global regulatory, safety and sustainability teams to ensure compliance across our Health fragrance and flavour portfolio.

The F&F Health Wellbeing manager will lead and manage a team size of approximately 4 to 5 specialists.

Objectives :

Enhance the flavour strategy and execution across all the Health & Nutrition portfolios, raising the profile of the team and benefit of great tasting product to R&D and the wider business to life.

Lead and execute trends and flavour technology programs which provide additional product differentiation across the Health & Nutrition business.

Bring breadth of expertise into the business from a technical flavour perspective particularly from the diary industry

Have full responsibility for the end to end execution of the Nutrition portfolio inclusive of identifying innovation technologies that enhance FEI opportunities through to cutting the tail and optimising the line-ups on shelf identifying and closing olfactive gaps

Within defined categories lead all new fragrance and flavour development briefs for Global NPDs, EPDs, ensuring best practice briefing principles are followed to deliver optimal fragrance or flavour delivery from our Fragrance and Flavour House partners

Ensure all fragrance and flavour briefing and recommendations comply with latest RB safety and regulatory requirements and RB global core Fragrance and Flavour supplier contract principles.

Ensure best practice fragrance / flavour sensory and performance testing is utilized when validating new fragrances or flavours

Work closely with other Health & Nutrition Fragrance / Flavour Managers to have visibility over fragrance or flavour banks to leverage for rapid rollout and execution

Establish and lead the Community of Practice for Flavour to build out best in class expertise, standardised of ways of working and scale learning across the Health and Nutrition business units.

Support local R&D F&F development, including fragrance or flavour evaluation and olfactive performance over the course of product stability, fragrance or flavour ordering, coordination & maintenance of fragrance or flavour information including safety paperwork, olfactive triangles, fragrance presentations, etc.

The F&F Senior Manager is responsible for personnel management of the direct reports, training and team engagement.

Scope :

Specialising in RB Nutrition focused on Global needs

Special focus on CDO and innovation Hubs

Additionally, may be requested to support across other RB categories requiring fragrance and / or flavour insight related to product experience

Key Challenges :

Shaping, development and execution of a winning strategy to achieve an economically viable and competitive edge on the superior sensorial experience delivered by relevant category RB products.

Awareness of the regulatory landscape and ingredients of interest to ensure proactive approach to ingredient use across the Wellbeing portfolio

Managing complex interfaces and relationships within the Category Development Organisation (CDO) and between the CDO and other RB functions / external partners.

Effective functioning in a matrix environment, ensuring seamless execution

Skills & Experience required :

5 years + experience within a Fragrance / Flavour / FMCG environment working on global brands, ideally with experience developing fragrances and flavours for consumers across both developed and developing markets

3 years + of proven Project Management experience within a cross-functional, international and multi-cultural environment.

3+ years fragrance and flavour evaluation experience ideally with personal care and health products

Strong networking, influencing and communication skills

Strong business experience including commercial / marketing strategy, consumer understanding and sensory testing

Experience in vendor management

Technical / professional qualifications required :

Minimum of Bachelors degree in a relevant discipline.

Above average olfactive acuity

People responsibility :
