The Communication Architectures Department performs trade studies, analyses, and simulations to optimize the overall communications performance of terrestrial, satellite, launch vehicle, and ground-based systems. With today's proliferated systems, rapid acquisition timelines, and enhanced resiliency, radio frequency (RF) spectrum is contested. Architecting this generation of comm systems while proactively addressing spectrum engineering is the mission of CAD.

The successful candidate will leverage CAD's geographically dispersed team of comm architecting and spectrum engineers and will coordinate with the broader Communication Technologies and Engineering Division (CTED) team. Main-mission communication satellites, wideband links, command and telemetry, and terrestrial networks, along with their enabling technologies, are the domain of the CTED. The division comprises all aspects, from architecture to implementation; our engineers work directly with corporate customers to ensure robust and resilient communications.

What You'll Be Doing:
  • Provide systems engineering expertise for space and terrestrial communication architectures
  • Provide technical analysis and develop simulation tools to assess communication system performance and to develop the next generation of communication architectures requirements
  • Assess the performance of satellite and ground systems, communications links, and wireless network protocols
  • Perform radio frequency interference analysis and modeling between communication systems to promote spectrum sharing and spectrum contention issues
  • Provide analyses and evaluations of national and international space policy activities
  • Survey and identify trends in spectrum usage and develop new communication architectures and concepts
  • Provide communication theory expertise including assessment of payloads, terminals, and satellite enterprise systems
