Metis assists the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) in developing leading edge technologies to counter WMD in support of CCMDs and transitioning these technologies to services and SOCOM. Metis provides expertise across the full range of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and high-yield explosives (CBRNE) WMD, Counter Improvised Threat and Countering Threat Network technologies to support understanding, detection, identification, characterization, denial, control, disabling, defeating, disposing, safeguarding the force, managing consequences, and test and evaluation in support of military and civilian operations.

Metis has an immediate need for a Physical Scientist - Senior.

Responsibilities

Provide R&D analysis support to the DTRA EC (Enabling Capabilities) Department with emphasis on testing and evaluating counter WMD (CWMD) Threats. Responsible for the Test and Evaluation (T&E) quality, veracity, and timeliness of the work required to satisfy the contract on a range of technical T&E performance including CWMD technologies, explosives, weapons systems, hard target defeat, counter threat networks, emerging WMD threats, hazard prediction and mitigation, detection, forensics, warfighter assessments and wargaming, survivability issues for US equipment, and IT systems. Designs and develops test programs, processes, and systems to measure the functionality and integrity of complex products and services. Writes detailed test procedures and protocols to fully assess product reliability and evaluates the ability of products to meet performance standards and specifications. Gathers test data and evaluates the results of tests to determine if product designs and architecture meets customer specifications and performance expectations. Develops thorough test simulations to evaluate how products react under different conditions and analyzes product failure to assess the integrity and reliability of product performance. Debugs complex test hardware and software. Analyzes test cases and scenarios and reports results. Collaborates with other engineering groups to improve or upgrade product performance. Supports systems development, assessment and refinement from concept formulation through implementation, operation and disposal. Employs interdisciplinary techniques to define and evaluate systems functionality including operational concepts, requirements definition, system architecture definition and development, analysis of alternatives, modeling and simulation, element integration, predictive measures, technical evaluation, detailed design and production, risk assessment, cost analysis, test and evaluation, and process improvement. Identifies potential problems and evaluates compensatory system designs using quantitative methods and scientific analyses to predict and measure outcomes and consequences. Formulates solutions for improving functional effectiveness and operational efficiency by analyzing a system’s elements such as people, hardware, software, facilities, policies, and procedures in an integrated manner.

Travel is expected (10% to 25%).

Qualifications

Qualifications:
  • Master's in a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) or related field.
  • 10+ years of test and evaluation of weapon systems, prefer large caliber penetrators.
  • Experience working in the area of:
    • Penetration mechanics specifically geologic materials.
  • Must be able to work independently and complete tasking with minimum guidance and supervision.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must have a Secret security clearance to start and eligible for TS/SCI clearance and able to maintain during time of employment.

Desired:
  • PhD in a STEM or related field
  • Blast characterization tunnels, free-air blast, instrumentation and measurement techniques.
  • Structural response – blast doors, response to blast and debris impact on targets.
  • Geophysical characterization.
  • Chem/bio test and evaluation Experience
  • Knowledge of Hydrocode modeling and simulation (M&S) – SHAMRC, CTH, ALEGRA, LS-Dyna or similar codes
  • Mechanical design, test article design – structures, new instrumentation capabilities
  • Information Technology & Evaluation Program (ITEP) T&E Certification
  • Knowledge of weapons systems, explosives, missiles, bombs, or special operations forces
  • Working knowledge of chemical and biological agents, their production, weaponization, delivery/employment, and battlefield effects on personnel and equipment, Countering Unmanned Aerial Systems (CUAS) or Countering Improvised Threats and their networks
  • Understanding of explosives, modeling, counter WMD technologies, Counter Threat Networks, Hard Targets, Deeply buried targets, or related work Specific technical expertise in CWMD
