Job Description

The opportunity | Te Whiwhinga mahi

  • Provide leadership in Addiction Research at the top ranked Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences in New Zealand
  • Influence policy and the way we respond to addictive behaviours through translational research with communities and services
  • Live and work in New Zealand’s largest, most cosmopolitan and culturally diverse city

The University of Auckland is seeking to appoint an internationally renowned and connected scholar with a commitment to having a positive impact in the New Zealand community, to the endowed Hugh Green Foundation Chair in Addiction Research. The successful individual will have a proven academic record in addiction research and will assume a leading role in New Zealand and internationally through high profile research into the causes, management and/or treatment of alcohol (preferred research area), drug dependence and other addictive behaviours.

The Chair will lead as Director the FMHS Centre for Addiction Research (CFAR). The centre was established in 2012 to bring together researchers committed to the field of addiction research and to disseminating research findings within and beyond the academic community to inform policy, practice and debate in the prevention and treatment of addiction. Working closely with treatment providers, the broad, multi-disciplinary approach of CFAR (from molecular through to societal research) brings a unique and practical perspective.

The candidate will demonstrate a collaborative, inclusive, leadership style, role-modelling cultural sensitivity and commitment to equity. Those not already familiar with our cultural context will demonstrate their commitment to developing their understanding of Māori and Pacific development, te Tiriti o Waitangi and our place in the Pacific. Interpersonal strengths including excellent communication, an ability to lead strategically, advocate and influence will be appreciated.

We welcome applications from internationally recognised senior academics or clinical academics with a significant record of peer-reviewed addiction research and research income generation, commitment to innovative teaching, curriculum development, digital pedagogies and postgraduate supervision. Experience in developing and mentoring junior academics, creating a positive and supportive collaborative environment in which they will thrive.

The opportunity is open to those from relevant disciplinary backgrounds. Those with interests in the following areas will discover considerable collaborative opportunities here:

  • Service improvement
  • Workforce development
  • Brief interventions
  • Pharmacological interventions
  • Co-existing mental health and addiction issues
  • Impact of addiction on families and communities
  • Behavioural and public health intervention for gambling

Additionally, research interests relating to harm reduction, recovery, breaking poverty cycles, criminal justice, policy, and population health will also be of particular interest.

The Hugh Green Foundation (HGF) is a charitable trust set up in 1998, with the aim of improving the health and wealth of local communities, inspired by Hugh’s own experiences of poverty during his childhood in Ireland. The HGF is a longstanding funder to the University and is committed to its continuing support.

The University of Auckland occupies a unique position in Aotearoa New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific. It is New Zealand’s largest university with over 40,000 students. We aspire to contribute to a fair, ethical and sustainable society, reflecting our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and our foundational relationship with tangata whenua. The University is committed to a culture that encourages and supports staff to reach their full potential in an inclusive and collaborative community of scholars. We welcome applications that will enhance the diversity of our staff and strengthen our links with diverse communities.
