Conservation Corps New Mexico, a program of Conservation Legacy, aims to continue the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930's. CCNM is focused on connecting youth, young adults, and recent era military veterans with conservation service work projects on public lands. CCNM operates programs across New Mexico that engage individuals and strengthen communities through service and conservation.

Leader Responsibilities

The Crew Leader (CL) is responsible for facilitating a positive crew member experience by setting an example of enthusiasm throughout work and camp life. The CL works together with the Assistant Crew Leader (ACL) in a strong partnership communicating directions, projects specifications, and constructive criticism through the length of the term. CLs will be expected to facilitate learning in the field for crew members, as well as mentor the ACL. Previously Corps experience is highly recommended.

Over the term, the ACL will be expected to expand their role, learn leadership strategies from the CL, be able to correctly and completely fill out paperwork, and on occasion, assume management duties for the duration of a project. The hope is that the ACL and CL will act as one leadership unit.

Field Crew Project Work

CCNM works with a variety of land management agencies across New Mexico, Arizona, and Western Texas, such as the United States Forest Service, National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management. Projects vary across crews and locations, but it can include trail construction and maintenance, ecosystem restoration, fencing projects, invasive species removal, herbicide application and more.

Training

The term begins with an intensive leadership training. This training will focus on developing leadership skills and forming strong bonds between leadership teams. Following leadership training, crew members will join the leaders for a week-long orientation.

The CL must supply their own personal outdoor gear and equipment such as a tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, day pack, multi-day pack, work pants, hiking/work boots, etc. CCNM will provide the tools, grocery budget on project, protective gear, and transportation to projects.

The typical schedule is four ten-hour days with three days off, or eight to nine days on with six days off, either in town or on spike (camping at the project) depending on proximity to the work site from Las Cruces, NM.
