New Energy Economy was founded in 2004 to build a carbon-free energy future for our health and the environment. New Energy Economy employs public education, community organizing, targeted litigation methods, and model solar energy projects to shift our energy economy from fossil fuel and nuclear extraction to clean alternatives in pursuit of environmental justice and human and environmental health. New Energy Economy received the 2012 Sustainable Santa Fe Award in Renewable Energy for its Sol Not Coal Project, the Santa Fe Community Foundation's prestigious Visionary Leader Award in 2013, the 2016 City of Santa Fe Energy Advocacy Award, and the 2016 Climate Courage Award from the Climate Change Leadership Institute. New Energy Economys legal advocacy work has received national attention. New Energy Economy is known for our collaborative campaigns that combine legal interventions at the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission and NM Supreme Court with grassroots organizing in order to protect peoples health; to protect water, air, and land; to advance clean energy; and to combat climate change. Our work is always collaborative in nature with a focus on representing the interests and needs of diverse constituencies, especially Native, Latinx, low-income, young people and future generations who are under-represented in energy policy development despite the disproportionate impact of climate destabilization, extractive industry, and rising energy costs have on their lives.
New Energy Economy is seeking a Legal Intern who shares a passion for justice and a healthy environment for all to join our team in Santa Fe, New Mexico to advance legal cases that facilitate a just transition from coal power to a robust and competitive renewable energy economy in the state of New Mexico. Our current docket focuses on: (1) protecting against further investment in gas and nuclear energy; (2) quickly shifting New Mexico from dirty to clean energy through community-driven renewable energy projects; and (3) supporting transition planning led by Diné and other impacted communities in the Four Corners Region.
New Energy Economys Legal Intern will work under the supervision and mentorship of NEEs Chief Counsel who has won cases before the NM Public Regulation Commission, NM Environmental Improvement Board, NM Supreme Court, and in her earlier career as a civil rights attorney fighting against police brutality, before state and federal courts.
The New Energy Economy Legal Intern will work closely to support the organizations legal battles in defense of the climate and the communities and ratepayers of New Mexico by helping its Counsel prepare for and document legal battles and proceedings by performing the following duties:
Review legal material for both internal use and case preparation
Review and summarize facts from case related documents and create chronologies of same
Perform legal research and produce memorandum of law based on that research
Maintain reference and case files
Conduct research on relevant laws, regulations, and legal articles for legal team
Collect and organize evidence for hearings
Organize and maintain documents in paper and electronic filing systems
Gather and arrange evidence and other legal documents for attorney review and case preparation
Prepare written reports to convey legal research and facts of the case
Assist with court filings, including document preparation, proofreading, fact-checking, preparing exhibits, and e-filing
Assist attorneys with other general litigation tasks including but not limited to creating and maintaining indices, preparing exhibit logs, retrieving cases and maintaining internal electronic files
Draft correspondence and legal documents
Get affidavits and other formal statements that may be used as evidence
Help coordinate the logistics of attending the hearing, including reservations, transporting exhibits and documents to the court and hearing room, and setting up computers and other equipment
Assist the legal team during the hearing by handling exhibits, taking notes, and reviewing transcripts
Qualifications:
At least two successful years completed of law-degree or law-degree
Ability to document and present research and related information in an organized, coherent, and effective manner
Highly dependable with excellent execution skills
Excellent written and oral communication skills, with proven ability in document production and appearance.
Ability to juggle multi-tasks
Excellent attention to detail
Familiarity with federal, state, and local court rules and systems
Ability to recognize and comprehend facts and legal concepts
Strong verbal, written, analytical, and interpersonal skills
Excellent time management and organizational skills
Knowledge of various court websites, docket searching, and document retrieval databases (PACER, CourtLink, JIS, TTAB, PTAB, Fed. Circuit, and Westlaw)
Passion for environmental and social justice knowledge and experience with climate justice issues specifically preferred but not required
