In order to protect our employees and continue to provide safe and reliable service to our communities, as of November 14, 2021 we are requiring all new MTA hires to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to their start date. Summary

Playing a vital role in the economy of New York State and Connecticut, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), consists of the busiest commuter railroad, subway and bus systems in the nation, with an annual ridership of over 2.6 billion. The MTA is comprised of MTA Headquarters/Police and the following MTA Agencies: Long Island Railroad, Metro-North Railroad, NYC Transit, Bus, Bridges and Tunnels, and Capital Construction. This position is in the Office of Infrastructure & Operations Division of the MTA Headquarters Information Technology (IT) Department.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide technical support for all aspects of connectivity between endpoints utilizing MTA's integrated LAN/WAN network environment.

Responsibilities

Level 3
  • Install, configure and troubleshoot complex network and SAN solutions supporting critical business functions and customer facing services.
  • Work with other IT technical resources to support all network related technical problems and services.
  • Support satellite locations in a timely and effective manner during the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of all network related technologies.
  • Ensure all required system documentation and record keeping requirements associated with maintaining and controlling IT assets are completed accurately, timely and in accordance with MTA policies and procedures and department requirements.
  • Participate in the evaluation of new products and technologies.
  • Evaluate connectivity requests and requirements and recommend effective technological solutions.
  • Guide less senior technicians and staff in the performance of their tasks.
  • Design and engineer solutions and standards to be applied within the section.

Level 4

Same as Level 3 with the following additional responsibilities:
  • Install and oversee the configuration and troubleshooting of complex network and SAN solutions supporting critical business functions and customer facing services.
  • Contribute to the planning and coordination of tasks associated with network technology related projects.

Level 5

Same as Level 4 with the following additional responsibilities:
  • Evaluate user requests and requirements and recommend effective technological solutions.
  • Lead the planning and coordination of tasks and activities in support of network related projects and initiatives.

Qualifications

Level 3
  • Strong knowledge and familiarity with configuring, installing, maintaining and troubleshooting network connectivity equipment including but not limited to switches, routers and wireless equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of LAN/WAN network protocols and use of protocol analysis tools for data packet inspection.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and support technical issues both remotely and on-site using standard MTA tools and techniques.
  • Ability to read and understand schematic diagrams, technical manuals and documentation such that supported equipment and software can be maintained with minimal training.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Strong people skills.
  • Ability to provide technical solutions to meet business unit requirements.
  • Ability to provide in-depth technical direction to less senior staff members.
  • Ability to design and engineer complex solutions incorporating standards and industry best practice to enhance and expand the functionality of the Corporate Data Network incorporating fault tolerance, resiliency and scalability.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to move and lift up to 25 lbs. of equipment such as switches, routers, UPS, laptops, firewalls, etc.

Level 4

Same as Level 3 with the following additional qualifications:
  • Advanced knowledge and familiarity with configuring, installing, maintaining and troubleshooting network connectivity equipment including but not limited to switches, routers and wireless equipment.
  • Advanced knowledge of LAN/WAN network protocols and use of protocol analysis tools for data packet inspection.
  • Ability to plan activities and provide advanced technical direction to less senior staff members.
  • Ability to formulate a plan, define tasks, and coordinate activity required to successfully execute network technology related projects.

    Level 5

    Same as Level 4 with the following additional qualifications:
  • Must demonstrate excellent knowledge and familiarity with configuring, installing, maintaining and troubleshooting network connectivity equipment including but not limited to switches, routers and wireless equipment.
  • Must demonstrate excellent knowledge of LAN/WAN network protocols and use of protocol analysis tools for data packet inspection.
  • Must Demonstrated ability to read and understand schematic diagrams, technical manuals and documentation such that supported equipment and software can be maintained with minimal training.

  • Proven experience working with senior level staff contributing to both short and long-term technology related planning strategies.
Education and Experience

Level 3
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related discipline; or a minimum of 7 years' experience installing, maintaining and supporting network technologies.
  • Must possess a minimum of 5 years of experience maintaining and supporting a complex network environment.

    Level 4
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related discipline; or a minimum of 10 years' experience installing, maintaining and supporting network technologies.
  • Must possess a minimum of 8 years of experience maintaining and supporting a complex network environment.

    Level 5
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related discipline; or a minimum of 12 years' experience installing, maintaining and supporting network technologies.
  • Must possess a minimum of 10 years of experience maintaining and supporting a complex network environment.
Other Information

This is a resume based position in the collective bargaining unit represented by the Transportation Communications Union (TCU) and will be governed by the terms of the associated TCU collective bargaining agreement for IT employees. As such, candidates selected for this position will be represented by TCU and be on MTA payroll. In addition, candidates selected may be required to work at any MTA Agency location.

As an employee of MTA Headquarters, you may be required to complete an annual financial disclosure statement with the State of New York, if your position earns more than $101,379 (this figure is subject to change) per year or if the position is designated as a policy maker.
