Job Description - Director of Information Governance and Records Management

The Director of Information Governance and Records Management will oversee and manage the Firm's records management programs and related information governance functions in all domestic and international offices. The Director will work with Firm management to effectively develop and implement policies, procedures and best practices for the Firm's electronic and physical data, both on site and off. The Director will manage the day-to-day functions of the department and provide leadership, training and direction to the Information Management staff. The position will report to Chief Information Officer and work closely with the co-chair of the Information Governance Committee.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Develop and implement departmental policies and procedures to support the Firm's information records, records risk management and data lifecycle management including retention and destruction programs
  • Monitor and develop the Firm's information and records management programs to ensure efficiency and compliance with records retention and information security policies
  • Mitigate operational and technological risks by actively supporting the Firm's information governance program and maintaining a strong commitment to data and information privacy and protection as directed by the Firm's CIO and General Counsel
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on information governance related issues and concerns in order to develop and measure the effectiveness of standards, policies and procedures
  • Supervise, train and lead department's resources responsible for implementing records management program and identify areas for improvement
  • Ensure that department staff are knowledgeable and keep current with records management policies and procedures
  • Manage mobility function, including lawyer arrivals and departures, file transfers to clients, co-counsel and other outside related parties, and internal file transfers
  • Oversee the design, development and administration of automated records management system
  • Enhance services for internal client base and manage expectations consistent with the Firm's standards of excellence
  • Manage third-party vendor relationships for all records management functions
  • Implement and provide Firmwide records management and related risk-management training to lawyers and Business Services

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree. Certificates such as IGP, CRM, CIPP or CIP preferred. JD a plus
  • 10+ years of experience in information governance, records management, or related area in a highly-sophisticated legal, professional services, consulting or corporate environment
  • 5+ years of experience in a senior management position
  • Broad knowledge of information management and protection laws, regulations and best practices
  • Strong computer and database skills; 5+ years of experience utilizing legal-specific automated records management systems required
  • Strong strategic, interpersonal and organizational skills required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to converse informatively with management and lawyers about records management issues
