- Supports the development of network architecture and standards.
- Tests new wireless technologies in support of university objectives.
- Recommends technology for specific applications including next-generation Wi-Fi technology, wireless network protocols, location and wayfinding, and wireless access point placement.
- Ensures that all technical decisions result in coherent network designs using the most effective methods and tools.
- Performs system maintenance, configures equipment, installs software and upgrades, installs patches, and monitors system status.
- Participates in a periodic after-hours on-call rotation.
- Designs campus-wide wireless network architecture.
- Drafts and presents change requests to the Change Advisory Board.
- Develops original and creative technical solutions to ongoing network engineering efforts.
- Responsible for the documentation of network designs, including reviewing and archiving as-built network drawings, wireless survey test results, generating network architecture logical diagrams, IPv4 and IPv6 assignments, wireless access point placement, and wireless controller configuration.
- Provides project management oversight of complex, cross-technology projects.
- Collaborates with customer groups to define user requirements and translates into technical solutions.
- Works with minimal direction and supervision, makes time for unplanned assignments and adapts to changing priorities.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent required.
- Minimum 5-7 years of related experience,
- 4+ years related work experience in IT working with the following data and wireless network systems:
- Structured cabling systems.
- 802.11 wireless systems
- Network technology components
- IP network protocols and common network configurations
- Ability to plan, implement, test, and troubleshoot hardware & software.
- Knowledge and understanding of the IP protocol and LAN/Wi-Fi administration in a secure but open environment.
- Proficiency with network tools (Ekahau ESS, spectrum analyzers, Aruba Airwave, and Wireshark).
- Working knowledge of 802.1x wireless security protocols.
- Experience designing 802.11 wireless access point placements.
- Working knowledge of Cisco switches, routers, and operating systems (IOS, IOS-XE, NX-OS, ASA OS).
- Experience in Cisco/Aruba wireless technologies
- Project management experience.
- Experience interpreting construction drawings and documents.
- Meticulous attention to detail.
- Aruba ClearPass experience a plus
