POSITION SUMMARY

Transgender Law Center is seeking an experienced and motivated Policy Coordinator to join our team, which works at the heart of a movement of transgender and gender nonconforming people and allies to change laws, policies, and attitudes to ensure that we can all live as our authentic selves. The Policy Coordinator will join a team of passionate, smart, and dedicated individuals who work hard, laugh easily, and are eager to learn and grow together as we change the world. The Policy Coordinator will collaborate with community partners and other Transgender Law Center staff to advance and protect the rights of transgender and gender nonconforming people under local, state, and federal laws and policies.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Synthesize legislation and policy to transgender and gender non-conforming community leaders to develop their leadership and promote their participation in legislative advocacy.

Analyze, review, and draft legislation along with other TLC staff.

Implement community-driven public policy priorities by developing policy reform strategies at the federal, state, and local levels, with a concentration on Transgender Law Centers efforts to ensure equality, particularly for transgender and gender nonconforming people of color.

Work collaboratively with Transgender Law Centers organizers, attorneys, and senior leadership to advance national, state, and local reforms; especially as it relates to migrant justice, criminal justice reform and the safety and well-being transgender and gender nonconforming people of color.

Monitor and coordinate TLCs response to developing issues in proposed federal, state, and local legislation or agency action.

Identify, secure and prepare for opportunities for Transgender Law Center to influence or draft legislation and policy at the state and federal level, including commenting on proposed legislation and rules, submitting statements and letters, preparing advocacy materials, and organizing and conducting meetings with elected and administrative officials and their staff.

Coordinate testimony at legislative and regulatory hearings at the federal, state, and local levels and secure participation of community members. Testify at hearings as needed.

Build and/or participate in national coalitions, partnerships, and task forces working to advance LGBTQ issues.

Assume a leading and strategic role in national, state, and local coalition campaigns on advocacy issues consistent with Transgender Law Centers priorities, including lobbying, communications, and grassroots outreach.

Work collaboratively with Transgender Law Centers legal, communications and programs team to create and implement community driven policy strategy that is centered in our work with Black migrants, Black trans women, disability justice, TGNC people living with HIV, youth and TGNC Southerners.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

2 or more years of experience with policy advocacy with legislatures, regulatory agencies or other institutions.

One or more years of experience in policy reform or advocacy at the federal, state or local level in the areas of transgender justice, racial justice or other relevant public policy reform.

Experience working with transgender migrants, Black trans communities, communities of color and transgender and gender nonconforming communities.

2 or more years of experience working on issues of criminal justice reform in an organizing or legal setting

A demonstrated commitment to a broad range of social, racial, and economic justice issues and an understanding of the multiple communities TLC represents.

A strong passion for advancing transgender equality through public policy work.

A high level of independence and initiative, creativity, and good judgment.

Excellent research, writing, and public speaking skills.

A demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong relationships and partnerships with coalitions of organizations, community members/leaders, and public officials.

A demonstrated ability to think and plan strategically, including an ability to lead and manage complex policy reform efforts involving multiple issues and parties.

Experience working in teams with people from a variety of racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, educational, religious, sexual, gender, and generational backgrounds.

Willingness and capacity for frequent national travel.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Spanish language skills.

Community Organizing experience

Experience working in the South or Midwest
