Senior Editor, One World

Random House is the proud home of the world’s most acclaimed storytellers, thought leaders, and innovators. Our imprints include Ballantine, Bantam, Delacorte, Del Rey, The Dial Press, The Modern Library, Random House, Hogarth, Crown, Currency, Clarkson Potter, Ten Speed Press, Harmony, Rodale, Convergent, WaterBrook & Multnomah, and One World.

Relaunched in 2017, One World is home to award-winning and bestselling authors who are collectively leading the cultural conversation.

We are currently seeking a Senior Editor to join our collaborative team of editors in a busy and deadline-oriented setting to deliver conversation-shifting books of high quality. The Editor will take a hands-on approach to all processes of book production from acquisition to publication for 6 to 8 titles annually. The position provides an opportunity to selectively acquire and develop titles for the One World list while also helping the Publisher launch a new imprint focused on entertainment, pop culture, and activism in partnership with a major arts and entertainment brand. The editor’s list will include a broad range of popular nonfiction - memoir, narrative nonfiction, criticism and essays, and illustrated books—as well as, potentially, some fiction and poetry. Moreover, the Editor will also be on call to run meetings with agents, packagers, and potential authors. The ideal candidate will have a passion for pop culture and an expansive, creative vision, while also being able to efficiently manage a diverse set of responsibilities.

The Role:

  • Evaluate manuscripts and proposals from agents and authors; recommend proposals for acquisition

  • Brainstorm new ideas for entertainment artists and writers

  • Coordinate with the Publisher to assess potential value of projects, craft P&Ls, and formulate acquisitions requests

  • Work with writers on concepts, outlines, and revisions of manuscripts, including substantive and line edits

  • Develop editorial projects and manage the lifecycle of the editorial process from acquisition to publication, liaising with production, managing editorial (copyediting), cover and interior design, and sales.

  • Partner with the publicity and marketing teams, working closely on creating book campaigns.

  • Prepare title information sheets; write and edit copy (cover and marketing copy)
  • Perform other related duties, administrative tasks, and support functions as needed

The Essentials:

  • A strong writer who has a broad sensibility

  • A strong history working with writers and creatives, shaping language and ideas into polished editorial works that start a conversation

  • An ability to build relationships with a portable network of agents and author contacts

  • Keeps a close eye on cultural trends in media, current events, and pop culture and can recognize how to translate trends into books.

  • Timely follow-up skills with the One World editorial team, our authors, agents and other departments at Penguin Random House and able to prioritize and complete multiple projects at once in a fast-paced and detail-focused environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • A goal-oriented team player who can cultivate productive working relationships

  • Proficiency in creative problem-solving, decision making, and time management
