Overall purpose and mission:
This position works with other store employees and with volunteers to maintain an orderly and safe store environment. Employee provides support for store activities in the donations receiving and processing area. The position will carry out a variety of specific periodic functions as needed with minimal direction and will also perform special tasks as needed. The ongoing responsibilities will include moving trash and recycled fabric and cardboard out of the processing area, unloading and stacking bags of recycled fabric, learning our donation intake process, performing seasonal inventory movement, moving furniture and other large items, and other tasks as needed. Employee will interact with store staff and with store volunteers on a cooperative basis, but the position responsibilities are independently performed. As store operations are learned, the variety of tasks may increase. Work hours can be flexible so long as job responsibilities are carried out.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Job responsibilities are carried out with minimal supervision, with collaboration with and assistance from employees and volunteers. They include:
Load and unload packaged recycled clothing from processing area to van to recycle trailer. Keep trailer contents packed to front of trailer.
As needed, empty trash containers into dumpster throughout the day. Open dumpster in morning and/or close and secure in afternoon.
Collapse donation boxes and periodically move to cardboard recycle dumpster.
Receive donations at dock. Greet donors and thank them. With training, screen donations for items suitable for sale.
Learn layout of sales floor and overall store operations to assist where needed. Move and/or rearrange furniture, shelving on sales floor.
Pack and shelve clothing boxes. Adjust inventory locations as needed to accommodate seasonal changes.
Drive the REACH van as needed for recycling, picking up items from donors or storage unit, and taking occasional trips to recycle center.
Assisting with maintenance of donation area and stockroom
Other activities – Within REACH has a small staff. As such, employees and volunteers may engage in a wide variety of “other” activities typical of any small retail business. This could include special sales, charity events, store projects, etc.
Knowledges, Skills and Abilities:
Operations Assistant should:
possess some understanding of retail store functions and operations
demonstrate aptitude for and skills related to maintaining a safe work environment
be able to SAFELY move and lift inventory and store recycling up to 50-75 pounds throughout the day
Occasionally be able to SAFELY move furniture
have good interpersonal skills in dealing with staff, customers, and donors
become familiar with and support REACH mission
Physical requirements: Position will require ability to move or lift objects up to 50-75 pounds throughout the day and being physically capable of moving heavy furniture; to lift, bend, stretch; to be able to periodically drive our store van; to speak and read English and communicate with customers and store staff; to walk and work safely in storage areas.
The store environment is clean and friendly with ample interaction with volunteers and customers. Environmental conditions are safe and pleasant, mostly indoor with some exposure to heat/cold in inventory receiving area. Tasks will frequently require working outside the processing area, which may involve inclement weather.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Work experience in a retail, service, or warehouse environment to include duties similar to this position
Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
