Do you want to build your development and operational skills, leverage infrastructure as code techniques on AWS, and be part of a team enabling the future of data analytics at Vanguard?

The Data Lake 2.0 team will be enhancing Vanguard's use of analytics technology by introducing the concept of data products, and building platforms, tools and automation to support the adoption of the data mesh architectural pattern.

Our teams are cross-functional, self-organizing, and autonomous. You will work directly with the product owner on a daily basis.

In your role you will:
  • Create automation that Vanguard Application Engineers can leverage to create data products.
  • Create custom integrations between existing Vanguard tools, AWS components, and vendor products.
  • Create automated tests for functional, performance, and security testing using TDD methodology.
  • Implement instrumentation for monitoring product health, business metrics, and consumption patterns.
  • Write documentation and provide support to data product teams.
  • Mentor and provides leadership and guidance to the other members of your technical team.
  • Attend engineering chapter continual learning sessions.

Most of our stack runs on Python, Java, and Linux. We orient around open source and AWS technology. We are interested in candidates from any background so long as you are passionate about software and have experience designing systems of significant scope.

Some of the technology we use that you can expect to encounter:
  • Python, Java, Bash/zsh
  • Pytest, JUnit, Mockito, Cucumber, Selenium, Maven
  • Atlassian Bamboo, Github Actions
  • Git
  • AWS CloudFormation, Lambda, Glue ETL, S3, EC2, IAM, and Secrets Manager
  • DynamoDB, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and Oracle

Specializations that could make a significant impact include:

  • Experience delivering shared technical components, especially build pipelines, APIs, and monitoring capabilities.
  • Experience with test automation and test-driven development practices and frameworks - mutation testing, functional testing, and contract testing.
  • Strong knowledge of AWS development/cloud/engineering standard methodologies
  • Knowledge of data stores - S3, Dynamo DB, Amazon RDS, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and others

Provides advanced level technical support for complex projects. Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and resolves hardware or software issues that span multiple technology domains, as elevated from the team. Develops technical standards and documentation.

Core Responsibilities

1. Designs, implements, and deploys cloud platforms to support and meet business needs. Identifies, recommends, and implements opportunities for improvement and performance issue solutions.

2. Provides advanced level technical support and ensures reliable operation of cloud production. Troubleshoots software systems on multiple cloud computing platforms and system integration into existing cloud computing platforms. Maintains comprehensive technical knowledge of software and infrastructure platforms.

3. Develops technical standards. Tests and evaluates IT vendor products. Reviews configuration parameters to optimize system performance and maximize operation uptime

4. Elevates code into the development, test, and cloud production environments on schedule. Provides follow up production support. Submits change control requests and documents.

5. Learns and understands client area business functions and requirements. Determines the appropriate technical tool to address the client's business needs.

6. Trains and mentors more junior staff on processes and releases. Troubleshoots and resolves complex issues elevated from staff. Provides guidance and consultation as required. Updates, writes, and maintains documentation for the department.

7. Administers system activities. Writes the technical portion of assigned deliverables. Performs systems analysis, including system requirements analysis and definition, and logical design.

8. Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Minimum of five years related work experience.
  • Undergraduate degree in a related field or the equivalent combination of training and experience.
