Job Description

Position Summary:

As a key member of the Application Engineering Team, the Principal Application Engineer reports to the Senior Manager- Application Engineering and is responsible for key Application projects while providing technical, procedural guidance, and oversight to all product line Application Engineers across the organization. The selected candidate will be a subject matter expert and will mentor and collaborate across ITW Hartness to ensure industry-leading technologies are implemented across all product lines to define and apply world-class equipment that meets our core markets’ needs.

The position will be based at the ITW Hartness headquarters in Greenville, South Carolina.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead key equipment applications, line designs, and proposals using expert level knowledge and experience to design world-class packaging designs in alignment with customer contractual requirements and international and domestic codes and standards.
  • Drive innovative solutions to differentiate ITW Hartness in cooperation with Mechanical, Controls, & Electrical design Engineering teams.
  • Establish best-in-class Application Engineering processes and procedures to generate proposals to meet the needs of our customers.
  • Evaluate and improve the Application engineering procedures and practices required to ensure robust, high-Quality, and long-life system designs, compliant with international and domestic codes and standards.
  • Ensure the consistent utilization of Application Engineering principals and procedures across all product-lines.
  • Provide expert technical support to Sales and Marketing teams and develop a joint understanding of market trends and opportunities to differentiate ITW Hartness product offerings.
  • Partner with Engineering Leadership staff to identify and drive design improvements in Quality, Cost, and enhanced customer experience.
  • Provide oversight and guidance to less experienced team members in the creation, review, and approval of complex applications and layout solutions.
  • Teach, Mentor, and Coach less experienced team-members, including helping them prepare for formal presentations of intended applications and proposals.
  • Ensure adherence to Design Record-keeping practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or 5-years of additional experience in-lieu of degree.
  • Minimum 15 years of applied experience in the Application Engineering field.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in an OEM design and manufacturing environment.
  • Minimum 10 years of applied experience with Packaging equipment.
  • Intimate familiarity with packaging equipment hardware and sub-components (conveyors, robotic arms and end-of-arm tooling, motors, drives, servos, switches, sensors, etc.) utilized in automated packaging systems and line designs.
  • Demonstrated ability to lay-out and integrate mechanical, controls, and electrical architecture to develop high-quality integrated solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to align with customers and support Sales to develop technical solutions and describe complex technical details of these solutions and how they meet customer needs.
  • Familiarity with the common domestic and international design and safety regulatory standards as they apply to the packaging industry, including associated cost impacts.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce results within a team environment, gain alignment, and develop productive working relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong indirect influencing and coaching skills (i.e., influencing non-direct-report team members).
  • Demonstrated ability to distil complex technical and procedural problems into a problem statement, gather data to draw conclusions, and develop appropriate plans to address.
  • Strong change management, analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent time-management, prioritization, and project management skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, including presenting complex topics to customers and senior leadership staff.
  • Willing to travel as necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Project Management Experience.
  • Advanced degree in Engineering (Master’s or PhD).
  • South Carolina Professional Engineering License.
  • Hands-on experience with manufacturing and assembly of Packaging equipment.
  • Hands-on experience with field service of Packaging equipment.
  • Experience in food and beverage packaging industry.
  • Experience with FANUC robotic systems.
  • Intimate familiarity with ITW Hartness product lines.
