Overview

As Manager Legal Operations, you will be a leader in the bank's Legal Department, a high-energy group of legal professionals dedicated to exceptional client service, value, and trustworthy advice to enable the bank's business. You will work with the Chief Counsel on programs critical to the Legal Department, including the outside counsel rationalization strategy, the department's technology and document management strategies, financial strategy and reporting, and development and implementation of strategic performance metrics. The Manager Legal Operations will oversee the complex strategic coordination of multiple priorities within legal initiatives in order to achieve operational excellence, including management of overall scope, cost, staffing and performance.

This role has been newly created at a time of transformation of the bank, as the bank's recent growth will require a more effective, efficient, and nimble legal effort. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to build strong relationships with the various functions and persons within the Legal Department and other stakeholders within the bank including finance, risk management, procurement, information technology, and bank operational groups. Responsibilities

Legal Business Strategy:
  • Manage an outside counsel rationalization strategy, in collaboration with Legal Department senior management and attorneys. This includes strategic selection of outside legal counsel with the aims of managing spend, maximizing value, and improving the quality of services and relationships. Monitor performance, rates, and other engagement terms, and ensure that lessons learned are captured and applied.
  • Help develop and implement technology strategies and manage legal technology initiatives such as document management, matter management, and e-billing.
Program Management:
  • Keep current on trends, developments, and best practices in operations and drive internal awareness and adoption as appropriate. Assist with development or improvement of form banks and other standardization and efficiency efforts.
  • Assist with financial, risk, governance, management, performance, and other reporting responsibilities.
  • Develop strategies to link and harmonize lawyers and legal professionals, and department operations, in multiple offices across the United States.
Managerial Functions:
  • Leads team of non-lawyer professionals. Takes an active interest in the development of others on this team and throughout the Legal Department. Maintains a "can do"/results orientation, in a collaborative and team-oriented setting. Drives engagement by creating a climate where people are motivated to do their best to help the bank achieve its objectives.
Relationship Development:
  • Develops influential relationships with vendors, business leaders, and other key stakeholders in support of program success. Oversees vendor selection, negotiations, issues resolution, and ongoing relationship management for assigned initiatives.
  • Communicates directly in-person, by telephone, by videoconference, and by email with bank officers, other business leaders, and associates. Must communicate clearly, effectively, and politely.
Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and 8 years of applicable experience.

OR

High School Diploma or GED and 12 years of applicable experience.

Additional Requirements:
  • 5+ years of experience in legal department operations or functional equivalent that has direct applicability to legal department operations.
  • Project management or Program management.
  • Credibility and capacity to build strong relationships with internal and external lawyers and other stakeholders, and to lead highly experienced professionals.
  • Takes ownership to resolve complex issues and provide quality services in a timely manner.
  • Must work well under pressure; independently and successfully handling multiple and varied projects simultaneously.
  • Strong Communication skills - interpersonal & written
  • Detail oriented.
  • Proven negotiation skills.
  • Solid problem-solving skills.
  • Effective Collaboration with others.
  • Ability to manage external counsel.
  • Proficiency with all Microsoft Office applications, Adobe Acrobat, and legal matter management and billing applications.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • JD or MBA.
  • 8 years in the legal industry.
  • Significant experience in a leading law firm or corporate legal department, or equivalent experience serving in legal functions within the United States military or government.
  • Experience in or with the banking, lending, or financial services industry.
  • Ability to work with the IT and cyber security teams to identify, implement, integrate, and optimize applications and tools, and build internal tools, training, and automation capabilities.
  • Ability to identify and pursue cost reduction opportunities by challenging current structure, cost models, business processes, etc.
  • Strong academic credentials.
