Job Number: 884 Riverside Research is seeking a Materials Scientist to work alongside leading researchers within the Composites Branch of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, the Materials Science Intern will investigate failure mechanisms at the nano to higher scales and understand the links between these mechanisms and processing-structure-property relationships. Key areas of research interest include developing hierarchical structures with nanoscale precision using 2D materials, elucidating the fundamental principles of the underlying mechanics based on chemistry and shape/size/distribution of the 2D fillers, and investigating related mechanical, electrical, and optical properties. Research activities may include synthesis, processing, bulk, and surface spectroscopy, mechanical (tension, compression, shear, creep) testing, thermomechanical analysis, high-resolution x-ray and electron tomography, atomic force microscopy, electron microscopy, in-situ testing, and multi-scale modeling. The position is very well suited for a recent or upcoming proactive graduate student with laboratory experience with a desire to work in a multidisciplinary environment. Job Responsibilities:
  • Support the synthesis and production of 2D nanomaterials
  • Implement a variety of characterization techniques to assess the quality of synthesized materials
  • Support the development and formulation of polymeric resins and coatings with a range of organic and inorganic fillers
  • Assist in the characterization of electrical and mechanical performance of formulated resins
  • Screen formulations based on key performance parameters (KPPs) to determine viability for inclusion in further studies
  • Interface with senior chemists to understand and adapt to the needs of the Government customer as dictated by evolving project directions
  • Develop a collaborative relationship with the Government customer and other mission partners

Required Qualifications:
  • US citizenship with the ability to obtain a security clearance
  • BS (or equivalent) in Materials Science or Chemistry
  • Experience in 2D materials processing, characterization, testing, and integration into advanced composite systems
  • Experience with differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, laser profilometry, rheometry, and other material characterization methods

Desired Qualifications: • Experience with composite fabrication • Experience with large scale nanomaterial synthesis
