Job Summary:

The Mechanical Drafter is a safety sensitive position that provides design support and assistance for all in-house engineering projects. Under the direction of the Engineering Manager and Sr. Engineer/Supervisor, this individual will participate in the design, manufacture, installation and operation of mechanical and electrical components, equipment, and systems. Job responsibilities include project management, developing and evaluating solutions, using cost controls and innovative thinking.

Position Overview:

The Mechanical Drafter is a safety sensitive position that provides design support and assistance for all in-house engineering projects. Under the direction of the Engineering Manager and Sr. Engineer/Supervisor, this individual will participate in the design, manufacture, installation and operation of mechanical and electrical components, equipment, and systems. Job responsibilities include project management, developing and evaluating solutions, using cost controls and innovative thinking.

What you'll do - Example Activities:

Actively participates in turnaround and/or plant shutdown activities by supporting piping and mechanical designs, electrical and instrument designs, and field support. Work with engineers in design of new installations and revisions of existing facilities. Prepare cost estimates for in-house projects. Designing, drafting, and checking of drawings relating to plant operations; including updating of existing drawings and retention of such records to support Management of Change process. Direct activities of contract personnel in the completion of engineering projects. Assists with requisition of equipment for engineering projects and monitors vendor progress needed to expedite purchases as required. Maintain files and records concerning engineering projects, equipment, special studies, and contractors.Requires drafting and basic knowledge of the following:
  • Ability to layout pumps.
  • Ability to layout vessels.
  • Ability to layout heat exchangers.
  • Understands insulation and piping requirements for its installation.
  • Develops piping transposition.
  • Understands and is able to lay out underground piping systems.
  • Understands and is able to lay out non-steel piping systems.
  • Understands and is able to lay out firewater systems.
  • Understands and is able to lay out relief and vapor recovery systems.
  • Performs steam tracing design.
  • Ability to layout utility stations.
  • Ability to layout compressors.
  • Understands and performs all modes of drawing checking.
  • Creates pipeline drawings.
  • Understands tie-ins and their requirements and develops tie-in lists.
  • Ability to locate "field" or "field-fit" welds on isos.
  • Understands and applies survey information.
  • Does off-plot routing drawings and all associated details
  • Ability to perform a complete check on all or any drawings in the drawing package.
  • Draws pipe way general layout drawings.
Practice safe work habits, follow safety guidelines and support company safety initiatives.

Required Skills:

Requires proven design and drafting abilities in piping, structure, and civil engineering areas. Requires the ability to work with limited supervision. Ability to work and communicate effectively in a team environment. Applicant must have physical ability to perform related field duties (shooting elevations, field drawings and running lines). Proficient in basic computer software such as Windows, Excel, Word, Microsoft Outlook. Proficient in AutoCAD and CADWorx. and/or Plant 3D. Prefer a technical school graduate in designing/drafting or a related engineering degree. Prefer experience with the engineering, procurement, and construction of small capital projects
