What type of person is a good candidate for a Correctional Officer?

Correctional officers are motivated individuals who want to aid in the rehabilitation of inmates and serve as role models to help those incarcerated make better decisions and successfully rejoin the community. The decision to become a correctional officer involves honing skills like mental strength and emotional stability. The two strongest interest archetypes for correctional officers are investigative and social.This finding is both expected and encouraging, given the focus of the role on constant intense observation of and interaction with inmates or detainees.

What are some of the responsibilities of Correctional Officers?

Correctional and Detention officers oversee individuals who have been arrested and are awaiting trial, or who have been sentenced to serve time in a jail, correctional or detention facility. Officers need to use the best approach when solving a problem by using both their training and common sense to determine the best course of action. They need to interact and communicate with inmates/detainees to keep the order in the facilitiesand courtrooms.

What is the workplace like?

Inside a correctional or detention facility, officers enforce rules and regulations to prevent commotion or disturbances.They supervise the daily activities of inmates so that they are aware of the inmates locations and to prevent misbehavior or escapes. Working in a correctional institution can be stressful yet very rewarding. Correctional/Detention officers may work indoors or outdoors. GEO's facilities are well lit, temperature controlled, and ventilated.
